You might be able to mitigate the drawing of the eye to the over exposure by cropping the image and reducing that area, Paul, and that might give it more punch. I take a fair amount of macro shots of flowers and insects in the garden but rarely shoot into the Sun or at an acute angle to it unless I've got a lens hood on the lens. Shooting into the Sun can work with some images depending on what the photographer is trying to achieve.:dunno::snork:

As I mentioned earlier what looks good on, say, your computer might not appear the same on other computer monitors. I use a Datacolor Spyder4 to calibrate my monitor for colour correctness but it only really helps with shots taken by me.:coffee::snork:

Ok, lets chat about this shot then...
Conversion from 4000x3000 RAW and processed to IR with the original grey bland sky replaced.
Once again the process from my mac thru photobucket has taken the edge off the shot. Lost it,s punch as the previous.

I agree, Capney, it looks flat and bland and again probably isn't doing justice to the original shot. I find that mono can suffer more due to pp than colour and the fine line between success or failure is much more critical and this shot now looks unbalanced.:dunno::coffee:

Yes. Quite agree. Think I will give up with posting B&W on site. Tis strange but I have had some success selling B &W on a few Print on Demand sites of the most unbelievable subjects!

Are you using red/blue/green filters in pp for the b/w conversion? If not, try it for the black and white conversions, try not to change the colour image just to black and white, otherwise you're in danger of it looking flat with little contrast and dynamic range.

Keep the original sky, and try a blue filter using the conversion to B&W...see how that looks, if not, a green filter. :blue thumb:

              An example here:

Original image (from Halloween last Oct in Warwick Castle ; some friends, my Son and daughter far right):

              87.jpg

Conversion to B&W using a blue filter:

              blue (1 of 1).jpg
Conversion to a B&W using a green filter:

              green (1 of 1).jpg

Conversion to B&W using a red filter:
              red (1 of 1).jpg

Conversion to a high contrast yellow (too HDR for me, but looks ok with a bit of vignette)

              y (1 of 1).jpg

The differences are easy to see, to me, the green is more natural, good dynamic range and better detail. the others are flat, dynamic range is muted and appear darker with less detail in the shadows. i'm probably telling you to suck eggs, but the differences using coloured filters makes a massive change. I'm with you regarding using a mac though, the shiny screens are a nightmare for image editing!!, and photobucket destroys the image.

Just been trying Simons suggestion re filter. Used three while converting this shot to mono and the green at 100% worked a treat.

Blue filter looks better to me...more detail in the shadows, and correctly exposed.

My rule of thumb is, more green in colour image, green filter. More blue in colour image, blue filter, more red in image, red filter.... I use this as a base and tweak where necessary.
