Love the area and have known Merthyr Mawr all my life. Can't agree that the sand dunes are highest in Europe though. That's the Dune Du Pyla in South West France.

Thanks Spruce, I'll store them away to remind me of all those lovely times

Sounds as if you have great times living there too :dbgrtmb:

I imagine Tusker Rock is still there?

Oops that posted itself before I'd finished :heehee:

Was going to say, it's an entirely different feel there, just a great pile (pilat is gascon for pile), whereas the dunes in Wales are much more interesting with dips and lumps and bumps to run up and slide down :hapfeet:

Yes the Atlantic coast here is brilliant if you surf or hang glide, but as it shows in your video, a tad windy :snork:

Two in three to go - plus Bowl of Beauty. I notice that has a couple of little flower buds. Are they best taken off? Boo hoo. Or shall I let it do its thing?

Yes, I agree I love them both for different reasons. I studied the flora at Merthyr Mawr when I was a student, the Dune is just for holidays. Climbing up it gives me enough exercise for guilt-free sunbathing for several days!

            Quote see below

Merthyr Mawr Sand Dunes are situated about one mile outside the village of Merthyr Mawr; they are a huge network of dunes, rolling over towards the Ogmore/Porthcawl coast, and once the largest sand dune system in Europe. The dunes also claim fame to the highest single sand dune in Europe, known locally as the 'big dipper'. The dunes are very popular with kids, runners and local wildlife enthusiasts. Scenes from the famous film Lawrence of Arabia were filmed at the dunes.

Love that film, read the Seven Pillars of Wisdom first and for once a film that didn't disappoint.
