But what would that actually achieve.
The system of first past the post needs modernising so that we either whittle down the candidates and get to make a second vote, or we have proportional representation, where by nobody's vote is wasted.

Spoilt ballot papers just get thrown away.

The only thing might be to make those currently involved think again, and of course force another go at an election - - - keep trying until one of them gets it right kind of thing?

If they knew they were effectively unemployed if they got their policies wrong, then maybe it would stop the current ongoing cycle.

I watched the budget this week, live on BBC, and to be honest it was pathetic. The behaviour from those in positions of trust and power to run our country was abhorrent. Day and daily, in my role as a manager, I am responsible for contracts and a budget in the order of £40 million a year - - not the BILLIONS that the MP's are responsible for - - yet, if I behaved the way they do when I was in a meeting, I would be sacked, end of.

Further to that, we are now in a capitalist society as has been dictated by our politics of years gone by - fair enough; if you or I paid a company for goods or a service that was not up to scratch, we would have right of recourse legally (be it refund, replacement etc.....) - - on that basis, why the hell should our government be any different? We all pay various taxes which are used to support services such as schools, NHS, police, fire service and even roads; how many of those are actually providing on a 'fit for purpose' basis??

Our NHS is on its knees (I am currently party to a strategy as to what should be done if an ambulance is called and does not arrive for more than an hour and up to FOUR hours!!), Schools have to regularly hold out the begging bowl, the fire brigade is seemingly constantly being cut with the police being similarly chopped at the knees, and our roads are like the surface of the moon. If the government were a private company, we would be holding them in breach of contract.

The best of it is, that a considerable amount of our taxes are being paid out to line the pockets of private companies (and individuals), all in the name of capitalism. How many roads could we fix if we were paying the staff and materials direct, instead of paying the profit margin of Bodgeit-and-Leggit Ltd?

You only get the chance to vote every 5 years, for Gods sake don't waste it., I wasn't actually serious when I said I won't bother to vote.

          Exactly, achieves nothing.

            Exactly. How can a private company do it cheaper and still make a profit? The government mantra will be better efficiency. To me that means one of two things (or both);
1] poor management/management structure in the public sector, quite possibly from the top down
            or
2] the private sector exploits their employees and/or employment law.

Clearly it couldn't be that certain palms have been well and truly greased could it :heehee:

I'm with the rotund Man in charge above..
Osbourne demonstrated the ability the politicians have to look like spoilt children and stand and tell lie after lie..
On budget day he told us all we were well and truly on the up !! The country owes far less than when they came into power which is of course a massive porkie.. Stay with us he says our plan is clearly working !!
The following day he tells us we are in fact in the crap and 19 Billion quid must be saved over the next term !

Public spending has been cut to the bone and the NHS is a shadow of what it once was. Councils are all but bust so where are these savings to be had ? Perhaps the politicians will hand back the 11 percent rise they had while nurses had 1 percent ?
Just watch what is left of public services shredded even more . The disabled will get a kicking along with folk who are genuinly in need.

I'm begging to dislike this country... Sorry ..

No [1], they get separated, counted and the numbers reported, just like votes for candidates. They are stored with all the deemed valid ballots actually cast for candidates and are ultimately disposed of at the same time as all the others.

[1] All ballot papers ultimately get thrown away.

Maybe I just meant that they have no bearing on the outcome of the election.

Does anyone remember the nationalised industries of the 70s?

Or the council workers,.... two blokes leaning and one digging.

They always were overstaffed, had strong unions, and took the pee out of the tax payer.

Not sure what the answer is, but to go back to those days is not it.

Isn't it about 65% of (valid) votes cast that have no bearing on the outcome? That's way in excess of a tiny amount of 'spoilt' ballots. It might reach a new high in the next GE if votes are further fragmented between all sorts of parties.

I reckon it could be a 50:50 chance of a Labour/Conservative Coalition the way things are going.
