I have pre sprouted my parsnip seeds on a piece of tissue paper and they have gone a bit long and curly. I have sown them but on further thinking will the parsnips be straight when they grow on?

    Thanks

    Dave

    Hiya Dave.

I don't think they'll be any good, sorry. My own experience tells me they don't like being transplanted in this way. When I've grown them, I've used toilet roll cores, filled with MPC, with the seed about 1/2" deep (3 seed per core), and placed in an unheated greenhouse. As soon as they're up, they pretty much want planting straight away. After a couple of weeks, I would remove the 2 weaker seedlings (assuming all 3 come up). Hope this helps.

I agree with Freddy, they will just fork grown in that way, they really dislike any root disturbance. best to sow direct. Having said that I've got some on the go in Root-trainers for an early start, but they have to bee planted before the roots touch the bottom:

      Hiya John.
Worth a go. I would probably be a bit nervous when it comes to getting the compost/seedling out in one piece?

I've used them before freddy, they are designed so the pot splits in two (as per the photo) and the whole thing just slides out - very easy.

Another method I used years ago was to pre-germinate parsnip seeds in wallpaper paste in a plastic bag. As soon as they germinate you snip off a corner and squeeze it out into the seed bed row.
