      Signed :blue thumb:

Utterly appalling the way that this country treats those that fought for and re-built the country.

I completely agree. I also think the older generation should be treated FAR better irrespectable of their backgrounds !

Not sure, the article says the council has offered deferred payment which seems to suggest the costs could be paid after his death from the proceeds of sale of his house and also the ombudsman has agreed with the council. I think I'd like to know more before making a judgement.

Please may I have a wee rant ?

            Permission granted ?

The "council " to use a gardeners term should Sod off and leave the bloke alone end of.

That chap like many and I include every single who has worked and paid into the system SHOULD be flaming well looked after.....

The fact that this gentleman has done so much and given so much should place that beyond question ! I hate bureaucracy.

            Rant over and breath .................................

@Charlie996 just wondering ... does the gentleman's family not also have a responsibility towards the father who housed, fed, clothed them and fought to protect *their* future?
Or, are you saying any and all responsibility falls to the tax payer? :noidea:
You see, I dislike families who abdicate familial responsibility towards their aging parent - other than to rant to a news paper about how atrocious the system is ;)

The version of this story I heard was that there are no surviving children.

Even if there are this chap should be supported like every other person of their generation.

But of course your point is very valid indeed but sadly families are not always there for each other and often if they are they may not be able to offer financial support.

In Charlies ideal world every older person will live to a ripe old age and have ace health. The sun will always shine the birds will sing and my garden will dig its self.

For give my flippancy I'm joking honest.

You know what I'm unsure where support should end or begin but to try and force that gent into care is not on. Sorry its just not !

The system has already taken the bulk of this chaps savings. Fortunately or unfortunately depending on your point of view this gent has outlived his savings.

He should and must be cared for in his own home . He as a person has more than paid his dues and I'm not just talking monetarily .

As a nation we send billions overseas to aid less fortunate people. I have no problem with that.

But we should before doing this at least look after our own.

Quite often not ... but then what if ...
So, the question isn't how can Brent Council treat his father like this, but ... how can he? ;)
Equally, the article being referred to states:
                  " ~ will not increase their funding for a live-in carer ...
~ the care package that Mr Clark is choosing is not affordable to council taxpayers ...
~ The council said Mr Clark’s needs can be met in a care home for £451 a week. Alternatively, he could choose to receive the same weekly sum and stay at home, but would have to pay the extra amount necessary for a carer ... "

He isn't being forced out of his home either - he owns his own home, so he can't be evicted/forced from it.
So, if you break it all down: Mr Clark has chosen to spend his savings to have a 24/7 carer, in his own home.
He would like this arrangement to continue, but no longer has the level of savings to provide 24/7 care in his own home.
The council have assessed his needs and offered an equivalent amount to what it would pay if Mr Clark required 24/7 care based on care home rates.
Son has stepped up to the mark to slate the council publicly. But, to be really fair ... if the son - who runs his own business (and, hourly charges for executive coach ... suffice to say not minimum wage  ) - has such great concern for the welfare of his father ... perhaps he should be looking a little closer to home before he begins bandying about emotive words such as "inhumane" in this type of situation.

Well if we had been given the full story.............. But being busy as I am I obviously missed quite a bit and on local radio it was reported the chap had no surviving relatives.

But none of this changes the facts we dont do enough to look after the older generation. OK that's for another debate ..

That said feel free to have a pop at me. I will however always firmly stick up for the under dog whether he or she did a lot for our country or not...

My sister organised her life to support my Father and then my Mother as their health failed and needed support, as we have changed our's to be/remain both close to and support Mrs Scrungee's elderly parents.

It's a real shame that his son only appears to have the time/resources to organize a petition for 'The Council' to do something for his father.

This is why I said I felt I would need to know more before agreeing with the original post (which was a link to the newspaper report and contained all of the points raised in the last few posts).

I agree that if we want the facts we do need to dig a bit deeper and we don't always have the time (or the interest) and that the media, always ready for headlines, doesn't have a vested interest in the whole truth and nothing but the truth. However, I also get quite frustrated when asked directly to sign a petition without having the facts available, I am seen as obstructive or uncaring if I say I'll wait for more information before deciding.

As a society we are very quick now to raise petitions and I'm surprised (should I be?) that we are also surprised when they seem to have little impact. My usual response is "Give me as much information as you can for me to read and if I agree with your point I'll write a letter" It isn't often well received - I think there is a tendency to presume that if someone has made the effort to ask, I should automatically reward you with my signature - but I do believe that even a small percentage of individual letters would have far more impact than a petition.
