What jobs are we doing in the Garden today 2015

Got it out I found a large tub at the back of the shed, a prefect fit

 

Had a large bumblebee buzzing around my garden, probably looking for a nesting site. Realised that I probably didn't have a site suitable. But. I was able to knock one together quickly

 

Moved some toms from the indoor grow lights to the greenhouse for the day to acclimate them. It is still WAY to cold at night to leave them in the greenhouse, and I'll be darned if I am going to turn the heat on in there.

 

Tidied the last of the beds today. Planted a couple of ferns.
Moved the cycad out of the GH, it's getting cramped in there now, who said your GH will never be big enough.

 

I've done quite a bit. Took a Hebe out of the border, trimmed its roots and plonked it in a pot in the hope to keep it. It just can't stay in the border.

It's been very dry the last few weeks with only a day of rain, so I watered a few things.

Divided up our peace lily... It made loads! Here are all twelve having a bath...


And outside, last year I took some clippings from a box hedge. They almost all have roots on them now, so I potted those up too!

Cleaned out the chickens and put on compost, then I got my new toy out (new shredder) and shredded all the stuff I cut down in the autumn, this also went on yet compost.

May I ask: why can't it stay in the border? Which variety is it?

 

Did the first outdoors sowings of the year in the veg plot. Beetroot, radishes, spring onions and mixed lettuce all sown and covered with netting so they don't get dug up by the cats or foxes.

Hoed and weeded round the autumn sown broad beans. Mucked out the chickens. Did the first Roundup spray of the year on the block paved areas and paths as plenty of weed seedlings have appeared in the last week or so.

 

Yes, I think it is best to pot it in ordinary multipurpose compost with some perlite to keep an open mix. Put a cover of grit on the soil surface to keep the soil in the pot if the water covers it. It's sufficient to pop the pot in a bowl or bucket with 2-3" of water just to cover the roots, but it shouldn't dry out. A little general liquid fertilizer can be added from time to time. If you have a water feature with fresh water coming in slowly this is a good environment, but the bucket is perfectly adequate.
I've got mine floating at the mo, but am intending to pot it up at some point. Also mine is in rainwater, whereas I think it needs water with more mineral content (it naturally grows in chalk streams) so I shall add some fertilizer to the water. It doesn't need high pH though. I read that it's happiest between pH 6.5 and 7.5.

Pricked out 20 ammi majus, 2 kinds of tomato and some lobelia. Turned over where I'm direct sowing (again!), it's looking nice and fine now.
Added some growmore pellets and chicken manure ready for sowing and planting out.
Biggest job was digging over a new bed near my greenhouse. We're going to use some timber to make raised sides for it with a path across the front. Think I'm going to mainly have dahlias in it so there's no rush to get it ready just yet. Think I'm going to add a nice layer of well rotted manure there too.

 

Couple of pictures to show what I working on. The area around the forsythia and next to the fence was just rubble and weeds a few weeks ago. Now got a few tough things (oriental poppies and hardy geranium) planted and some hyacinth bulbs planted out to die back. New bed needs more work!

 

It's 'Wiry Joy' I think. What's nice about it is it has grey stems and very thin, small leaves which are unlike most Hebe's I see. And it has little pink flowers almost all year.

I do really like it, but for two reasons it had to move. The border is going to be for quite vibrant colours whereas this is more pastel pink. And also I need that sunny spot for a Dahlia :D
