To make espresso without the faff of a machine use an Italian cafetiere. This is the kind you put on a stove top and the water is forced under pressure up through the coffee to sit in the top compartment. Use the kind of ground coffee (not instant) you prefer. I like the Lavazza range. You should get crema (the froth)

I've got one of those too. The Lavazza stuff is good, as the the Lidl product.

We don't have instant in this house so can't comment. I find the simplest way is good, so we use a cafetiere and use water boiled and then let to sit for a couple of minutes, pour over coffee ground and let steep for 4-5 minutes. As mentioned never wash cafetiere in suds, wipe out and rinse properly.

Used to use Douwe Egberts. the green packets which was excellent. Think they changed the beans or something as it is not as good as it once was. Surprisingly we've found that Lidl's Bellarom French and Italian blend ground coffee to be excellent and good value, £1.79 I think. And, make it strong!
