But who is closer to a pull-in, I've had a person that wouldn't go into a pull-in once, even when i was waiting at one for the person to pass and the person wouldn't use the pull-in they just came up to the front of my car and then i had to reverse back :frown::mad::scratch:

Once, when driving in the Lake District on a very narrow road lined with stone walls, I met a driver coming the other way. He was driving in the middle of the road (no problem until you see someone else coming) and stopped when he saw me.

I put my wing mirrors in (fortunately just a press of a button) and pulled right up to the wall on my side (no more than an inch from it) and waved to him to drive past. His face went white and he just shook his head.

By then there were cars waiting behind both of us - not one of them hooting! Both the driver behind me and myself walked up to him and said there was plenty of room for him to get through. He actually started shaking!!! So I told him to get out of the car and I would drive it. He did so, without saying a word.

I had to drive his car for about 200yds before the road widened out. The other driver took his arm and walked with him behind the car and seemed to be calming him down. He got him into his car and he drove off.

The rest of us went on our merry way.

People who can't handle narrow roads should go a different way when they see the signs that say they're narrow!

so glad you said this. I try to avoid narrow roads whenever I can. I can't turn my neck and body round sufficiently to feel safe with reversing in tight spaces.

In fairness, he probably was. But, I only have a matchbox car, so it was far more sensible for me to pull in (plus, I don't have a schedule to keep and X amount of people dependent on it).

Just perhaps he suffered from anxiety and he had a panic attack,to be fair if this was the cause then he would have felt alright until this moment, you see other people cannot see how you feel inside as you look perfectly physically fit on the outside,I am only mentioning this as I know many, many people who are live with anxiety, including your truly ,just trying to see this from another perception;)

I drive on narrow roads with high hedges as often as on normal roads and more often than on motorways. I don't mind reversing into a suitable gap etc but I can't help but get annoyed when I encounter big glossy cars being driven by people who are obviously not used to narrow roads and who can't or won't reverse when they're much closer to a gateway or pull in than I am. If you're not prepared to get your tyres muddy stay off country roads!

My friend's mother was offered well above the asking price for her 3rd generation family house at the edge of a small village. She became suspicious and had to make several enquiries regarding the prospective purchaser (the offer was made through an agent) before finding that it was a well-known food chain.

She decided she wouldn't do that to her village even though she would be moving away and so sold at a much lower price to a local family.

10 years later it's the site of an even better known food chain (with golden m's)!

I live on a single track road with very few passing places. Luckily it isn't a "rat run" so for most of the year it isn't very busy but you do get tourists/out for the weekend drivers on it many of whom are very reluctant to reverse. There are precisely 2 families, us and our neighbours who have to use this road. I used to do the majority of reversing but not any more. Unless it's my neighbour or I am very close to a passing place easy for me to get to I DO NOT reverse. It has been known for me to switch off the engine and pick up some reading material:):):). It is amazing how many of these reluctant to reverse drivers CAN'T reverse. We have a burn that runs along the road. 2 people to my certain knowledge have ended up in it as they couldn't reverse properly. Simple, if you can't reverse adaquately and don't want to get you car scratched by hedging, get muddy DON'T use single country roads. driveway 003.JPG

Maybe: but, what of those people who may have taken a wrong turn and found themselves (reluctantly) in that situation? Or, those who have a satnav that has lead them in the wrong direction? :noidea:

I have to use a single track lane on a Thursday, until recently I've always reversed into the pull in regardless if I'm closest or not, however there's a 4x4 driver, obviously in the school run (back home) she's the most aragant awkward person I've ever come into contact with! She will not stop, reverse or drive on the mud. Last week was the final straw! I stopped in line with the pull on & switched off my engine & crossed my arms! Another lady pulled up behind me, so 4x4 woman had to drive on the mud & get her car dirty, she gave me the death stare & a rude finger gesture! I smiled & stuck up my thumb....well there's no need to be rude!!!! In the supermarket at the weekend I saw the lady who was in the car behind she came over & said ' what a wonderful job you did with Mrs....she now gives way in the lane!' I'm dreading going up there again incase I see her this week, however if I've done some good that can only be a good thing!

Yes, there are a few of those but they will often stop you and ask for directions. Even so, if you're driving and in charge of a car you should be able to negotiate a public road which includes sometimes giving way or reversing.
