I had the delights of root canal treatment yesterday afternoon, and at the end the dentist showed me the X-ray of his handywork, and showed a darkened area surrounding the base of the tooth that he said was infection that now couldn't escape into the tooth, and that I should be prepared for a bit of pain over the next day or so as it built up now it was trapped until such times as my immune system dealt with it and it would calm down.

By 9pm last night, I was climbing the walls with the pain - nothing was touching it, and it just got worse and worse until I hit it with a double whammy of painkillers (safe combo) just to get a couple of hours sleep (which I thankfully managed). Today, the pain is not just as raw, but that appears to be because the infection is no longer as localised as it was to begin with and now the left side of my face and the front of my lower jaw is swollen, apparently due to the infection spreading itself out a bit. Its been driving me mad all day whilst I have been sat in a training course.

On the bright side, my bum should start to sound like a motorbike soon.............

Coz abscess makes the farts go Honda!

I have had root canal on two teeth , but once the teeth were drilled out and the nerve endings removed you shouldn't have any severe pain , yes sore but not what you have gone through .

I have had a root canal on my one front tooth but only because it died after being knocked out of the socket and pushed back in. So i was lucky it had already been dead for a few years before i had it done

I should publicise my story to highlight the dangers of playing run across in the school playgound :heehee:

That emergency dentist trip was not much fun at all esp for a 9 year old. I fully recommend that if you are going to kock out your front tooth ensure its properly knocked out and not hanging in your mouth. Im pretty sure having a fake tooth cant be as bad as having one pushed back into the gum.

Im so thankful for the invention of vaneers and crowns tho otherwise I would have one black front tooth.

@fat controller - many many moons ago, I had an abscess and my dentist advised me to get some cotton buds, some salt water (as hot as I could bear it!) and to dab the infected area with the wetted cotton bud.

But - as you have stated that your face is swollen ... that alone would qualify you for an emergency appointment with your dentist ... add to the fact you are in pain should guarantee you an emergency appointment: go get one!!

It will eventually blow out through the bone of your jaw. You can see the resulting hole in the jaw of the skulls shown on Time Team.

                  Cheers, Tony.

I would ring your dentist FC there should at least be a recorded message telling you how to get out of hours care.
Failing that NHS 111 will direct you to a local service.
As the infection is spreading you need to seek urgent dental/medical attention to help treat it promptly.
Good luck, hope it is soon resolved.

Ouch FC! I've been in your position a couple of times, there's nothing worse than dental pain! I agree with Adendoll, if your face is swollen that's not good and you should seek emergency treatment.

My dentist is really good, and to be fair he did warn me that this was coming - don't make it hurt any less though :snork:

The abscess is clearly coming out the way, rather than going in, so no holes in jawbones here - in fact, if the blighter would just pop, the whole thing would be over and done with. The swelling on my gum between front lip and teeth is almost at the point now where it is at tooth level, so it doesn't have anywhere much left to go - it either pops, or disappears.

I wouldn't want to see any old dentist (I am a lot braver than I used to be, but not that brave), so I will keep it until the morning and if it is no better, I will pop in and see my dentist.

                          You have my sympathy FC.

Just a month ago I was advised to have root canal treatment on a back tooth.
After an hour or a bit more of filing and drilling he sealed it up temporarily and said come back in a couple of weeks.
When I returned he said the tooth was no good any more and he couldn't crown it and it had to come out,

( He had chased me into the carpark on the first appointment to say the one in front needed the same treatment, root canal and crowning, it is mostly filling that one, I said leave it for the time being.)
Anyway it took him 2 hours to extract the tooth and on two occasions he called on another dentist for advice.
If I had been able to speak, at the time, I would have said to the other dentist, if you know how to do it, then you do it.
But my mouth was locked by that point.

I get the feeling there are quite a few so called "dentists" out there that are just getting a bit of experience on the NHS.
Might be qualified, but dont really know what they are doing.

My dentist lanced mine and once the pressure was relieved it was heaven ...

Aye, sleep and I have almost been strangers this past couple of nights - even my amitryptiline didn't dent the pain in my gob last night. Since it has spread out though, it is less 'firey' if you know what I mean? Hopefully I will sleep like a (drugged up) baby tonight.
