a year or two ago, I tried to get this tree identified, without success. I thought I would post it again, in case anyone could help and offer suggestions once again. I bought it from a GC about 8 years ago and have taken cuttings back, but they are not 100% sure of what it is. I know the bottom half is a cherry, but am not sure what the top is. It is about to flower; over the next week or so I will post more pics as it develops. Thanks....
Oh and please pay no attention to the horrible grass around the tree...this has been slowly happening as the light has been lost! I haven't quite decided what to do with this now shady area... :-)

you could detach and observe a couple of leaves and compare them to some picture online...Also, you should observe the position of the leaves on the tree.

I've just looked at bird cherry. It's definitely not that. The flowers do not grow like the I ages I have seen. Also, there is never any fruit. The flowers simply open and then die. There are hardly any other trees around me as most people have never bothered planting up their gardens. I do live near a wooded area, but that's mainly silver birch trees.

what is evident is that it is a bad grafting on a cherry or prunus base. The swelling is a scar. What colour are the flowers?

I was at Bents garden centre on the weekend and went looking at the cherry trees. Before going, I had searched the Internet and the only think I came up with was morello cherry. I felt that this was a bit daft so ignored it. Once at the garden centre, the only cherry that looked like mine was...the morello cherry. However, the flowers were bigger than my tree. Part from that, the flowers and leaves looked the same. Is it possible to have different varieties of morello cherry trees? And is it possible that they don't necessarily produce fruit?
The two pics below show the morello cherry from the garden centre (the one with the tag) and one pic of my tree . I'm determined to get to the bottom of it.

Whatever it is...I've been growing it now for about 8 or 9 years and love it. I just wanted to try and find out how tall it would grow.

I think they are different cherries and the one with the label isn't necessarily labelled right. Garden centres and nurseries often make mistakes. Is it possible for you to visit another nursery to compare.

The National Fruit Collection is at Brogdale in Kent
http://www.brogdalecollections.co.uk/ However the emphasis is on fruit.
The bark looks like a cherry, it could be an Ornamental Cherry, of which there are many. These often don't produce much or any fruit.
