Potted up my squareline guttering with about 36 strawberry plants.Hopefully in a couple of weeks it shouldbe a self watering system that will produce strawbs then salad from june onwards.Well thats the plan anyway but no plan runs smooth right?

Let's look at it this way FC. If you paint the walls of a room indoors you will have to do the woodwork as well because it will then look bad against the new paint. There's only two ways round it as far as I can see. Demolish them or demolish and replace them, or put in trailing plants to hide them. :)

Demolishing is a bridge too far I think @Sheal - most things I will get away with, but I don't think the landlady would be chuffed if I was knocking the bolts out of her garden

Had a nice couple of hours after work just watering and pottering. Squished my first 2 lily beetles and saw off a few aphids in the GH.
Is it wrong to say I would really like some rain???

No Charlie, I was saying the same thing this afternoon, my lawns are starting to turn brown!

I spent a disastrous four hours working in my front garden today. I intended to partly trim a hedge, strim all the necessary bits and mow the lawn which would normally take me about two hours or so. Interruptions including phone calls, demanding washing machine, strimmer breakdowns and a twenty minute chat to a neighbour put pay to that. Whoever invented twin strimmer line should have been.......!!! I got so annoyed with it and the reel, it was thrown down the garden!

I'd put colourful plants in front and/or trailing down so that the eye is taken by those instead of the hard 'landscaping'. Then make the decision not to be irritated by any of it.

@fat controller Just a few thoughts.

When making the new edge of the lawn you should definitely make a curve in the corner otherwise it's difficult to mow. Do you have long handled shears? If you do then you can do the curve with them as you get a much smoother curve and much quicker. In this dry weather you may need to water the lawn first otherwise it will be difficult to cut properly - but only make the soil damp.

Using the shears you're able to cut a continuous curve without lifting them out of the ground. You'll only be cutting the top one inch but the lower level (depending on how deep you like to make your edges) can then be easily done with a spade. Using a spade to make the curve means you have to lift the spade for each cut and get a series of straight nibbles that need to be sorted afterwards.

Re paving and wall. I'd be inclined to leave the wall alone as it looks OK. The slabs don't look too bad but if they do annoy you then you could replace them fairly cheaply. The problem then would be they may make the paving behind look a bit dirty - but the paving doesn't look too bad. You could also try paving cleaner and there are a whole variety of them. That would be a fairly cheap alternative.

I thought you were going to type "is it wrong to squish lily beetles"? We all have our various approaches to gardening here - I could not find it in me to kill these attractive beetles so I have a matchbox (with holes in the top of it) to place them inside. When I next go out, I tip out the matchbox in a waste ground area.

Yesterday I planted up 18 of my new ferns for my planned fern wall. And potted up three fuchsia triphylla 'Mary'. Took quite a while. Another 30 ferns to go in coming weeks!

And not a garden job but I found out today that I passed my first four RHS Level 2 exams :)

I got 6 fuchsias from the local Lidl, so will be potting them on this afternoon, along with moving on the harbinger and tumbling Tom tomato plants. Delighted to say that they are all tiny, compared to the two yellow pear tomato plants!!

Then, if I have the energy, I should mow the lawn, or cut one of the hedges, but just want to doze right now. Could be the gentle sound of canine snoring around me....

                            well done @JackJJW :star:

I have started planting out the lavender plants for the hedge down the sides of the path. I had 39 of the plants left from the 48 plugs that I got for a £5 so had to order £20 more to cover the length of the path but I don't mind as that is still 59 lavender plants for £30

Three sections done. Plan to get the last section planted today and then wait for the other lavender plants to arrive to finish it

Unfortunately I work full time and rarely go out walking in the week, so it would be a long painful death in a matchbox if I didn't dispense them with a quick squish. Sorry.
I do avoid pesticides and weed killers as much as possible.
