Last night I let my biggest tomatoes stay out all night, it only dropped to 11 deg C (and some Tomorite helped them enjoy it).

I bought just two "First in the Field" plants last week and was advised that they're ready to go out now. I put them out in a raised bed with morning sun and have covered with a bell cloche each. It's the first time I've tried outdoor tomatoes so it is an experiment. I haven't seen them mentioned in this forum. Does anyone have any advice specific to this variety?

No advice regarding that particular variety, but I'd say it's a bit early to be planting outside, even with a cloche. Bear in mind, toms like temperatures no less than 10c.

Not heard of that variety westwales, but you'll need to take care - we had a couple of frosts last week and there are harder ones on the way. Personally I would have waited till June to plant outside tomatoes her in Surrey, maybe you are a bit milder.

How to grow First In The Field
                        • Full Sun
                        • Medium
Enjoys a full sun position in your garden and remember to water moderately. First In The Field is generally regarded as atender plant, so remember to wait until your soil is warm and the night time temperature is well above freezing before moving outside. Use USDA Hardiness Zone 3 - 14 as your guideline for the appropriate climate for this plant. First In The Field needs a loamy soil with a ph of 5.0 to 6.0 (moderately acidic soil to weakly acidic soil).
Growing First In The Field from seed
Start seeds indoors six weeks before last frost date.

Try to aim for a seed spacing of at least 2.60 feet (80.0 cm) and sow at a depth of around 0.78 inches (2.0 cm). For optimal germination, soil temperature should be a minimum of 12°C / 54°F.
By our calculations, you should look at sowing First In The Field about 42 days before your last frost date.

                        Transplanting First In The Field
Transplant out when around 15cm (6 inches) high.

Plant to the first set of true leaves to promote strong root growth.

First In The Field is tender, so ensure you wait until all danger of frost has passed in your area before considering planting outside.
                        Harvesting First In The Field
This variety tends to mature and be ready for harvest in early summer.

Yes, many early varieties of tomato are more cold tolerant than is the norm for tomatoes, but none will survive a temperature below zero.

re: First in the Field tomatoes.

Thanks everyone, especially Armandii for all that detail. I thought it was early too but the grower definitely said put them out and that they had been hardened off. They're 5"-6" tall and looking very healthy. I've put them in a very sheltered spot in a raised bed (still keeping covered). I was afraid that putting them inside when he said they were ready to go out may harm them more. We'll see. As I only bought two plants I'm not giving up much growing space so I don't have much to lose.
Will update as they go along.

Sowed 7 "Tumbler" yesterday. Possibly on the late side for seed sowing, but the packet was out of date anyway (2013) so simply thought: Why not!? :noidea:
My other tomatoes are outside in a cold frame in a sheltered part of the garden. But, reading JWK's post above ... maybe I should bring them back in again?
