As many of you know , we have close ties with some Nepalese friends. I posted last March 2014 about our recent trip there.http://gardenerscorner.co.uk/forum/posts/788434/
We met our young man Hemanta ( we funded his education in a Kathmandu Boarding school) we met his pretty wife Anu, their parents and we visited Hemanta's school and met Governers, teachers and saw many happy children in their classes. They are so keen to learn and treat their time at school with much reverence.
It is painful to see all that has happened to Nepal over the weekend and we are thankful that we have established contact with many close friends and they are all safe and as well as can be expected. They all sound breathless, anxious and fearful. As Hemanta said last night "We all started a new life yesterday". What will become of them all is difficult to contemplate. There will be so many challenges ahead. They are a tough Nation and they will make it through all this somehow but they will need much help, compassion and generous contribution from the rest of us who will NEVER know such tragedy and grief.
If you can find it in your heart to donate to a Charity that's involved directly in the Relief aid for Nepal, I will feel as though I have done a little to help make this time bearable for them,
    thank you,
    Jenny namaste

Glad your friends are safe. I'm hoping to go back to Nepal myself, perhaps in the autumn, as I have good memories of previous visits.
          Will look for suitable charity.

I will make a donation Jenny.

Someone I know runs an animal rescue organisation in Sri Lanka and she's on standby to fly out there to help the animals. Truly truly tragic :frown:

              Already done :)

For anyone considering donating to a charity to assist Nepal, an organisation which evaluates NFP organisations has put together a list of 7 (vetted) charities who are doing relief work in the aftermath of the earthquake.
Charity Navigator (the link takes you to the list)
They also offer some sage advice:
Hope that is of help to someone :)

                  Hi Jenny

I also have friends there after an unforgettable visit there 2 years ago. I donated this morning to the Red Cross as the joint appeal hadn't been announced.

The travel company I went with are a not for profit company and always use locals. We were given a tour of a typical family home by a group of children (all paid) in Baktapur, a stunning ancient city. News has come through that 2 of the children are safe but the house they showed us around, is no longer. I'm really shook up by this as it was a heavily populated area.

The death toll is going to be much higher than announced :frown:

Every time I tune on to a news program, the toll is rising steadily and many people aren't officially registered and their deaths may never be accounted for,
                    Jenny
                    and thank you @simon n,

Such a terrible thing to happen to them - in addition to our financial contributions, I am sure we all wish them safety and time over the coming weeks and months to rebuild their lives and to mourn those who they have lost.

So frustrating that they have planes loaded up with provisions but cannot land there currently. I believe one plane is hopefully due to land there tonight.

Over 4000+ fatalities this morning. At least the runway has been repaired sufficiently for us to send a large RAF transport /cargo plane that took 6 hours to pack ,
