depends how patient you are, and the area it is in. If you can just plant around it, mother nature in a couple years will take care of it. Insects etc will work on it, especially if you pile soil on it. If your impatient, you have to dig deep around the roots, get some chain around the roots and tie it to your car and pull (did that once).

Still have 8 huge tree stumps we are dealing with from the 8 trees we took down two summers ago. Stump grinding is so expensive. One we are burning out, (almost done) 6 we are leaving to nature due to the proximity of where they are to other plants. One we will start burning out this year. The two that are in my oldest garden, have toyed with little hobbit houses to sit on them, just for a idea.

Yep, that was the way, I did a big oak tree years ago and it went with a bang, 3/4 foot into the air and sat back into the same place, so we had to do it again and put the bang just on the side of the root so it went over side ways,
Yes it's not aloud today, that's why i dig them out by hand or with a digger :dbgrtmb:

About 20 years ago i had to get rid of a strump for some one down the road, it was a big fir tree, which had fell down through there house in the bad wind, the tree must have been about 150/200 foot tall, the root was left after the tree was cut up, but the owns wanting it moved, the root weight about 18/20 tons, it took me 3 weeks to move it to some where that i could burn it up, so it was put into a big fire (5th november:snork:) and it burned for 6 months

In the old days potassium chlorate was used by drilling large holes in the stump, pouring in the chemical, covering it for some weeks and then 'light blue touch paper and stand back'. Sodium chlorate was also used in the same manner.

        It's not allowed nowadays.

I like the leave it idea, mainly because getting it up is hard work as Jiffy said. Another way is drill around the edge 1/2inch or so holes 1 inch deep 2 inch apart and fill with Roundup, it won't be seen again. Also as above, make a feature of it until one day it has rotted away. Roundup is biodegradable. They take a while to rot away.

          or a statue?
I had a large stump something similar. I cut the top level and set a metal lantern on top. It looked fine :)
