We're probably now getting an idea of what we've lost over the winter and also what has surprised us by surviving.

My losses were heaviest in the greenhouse when the shed electrics tripped. Too many succulents and a few seedlings. Worst of all my Salvia discolor is dead.

    Outdoors it was much better;
Three Salvia species which were borderline, two Tricyrtis and Solanum rantonetii (which was iffy at best as far as surviving went). I've also lost my Fuchsia perscandens, F.coccinnea, my white Sollya (the blue one has been cut back hard by the cold but has survived) and Clerodendrum bungei (which was in a sheltered spot by the back door). My huge Echium candicans is toast but one of the potted ones survived in its sheltered spot.
Dietes iridioides has been damaged badly but will grow back.

A couple of surprising survivors are Datura wrightii and Salvia stolonifera.

Finally, Bomarea edulis has survived its first winter after planting out. Not so much a surprise as I was assured that it would by seasoned Bomarea growers but very pleasing nonetheless :hapydancsmil:

What have you lost and what has surprised you?

I lost a healthy 3 year old Heather. Took some hits losing mature trees in the gales. However, the cut down branches are a gift to the wildlife. My alpines have never looked better and are blooming to their hearts content.

Lost a scabious butterfly blue which I expected, it was mildewy as anything before the harsh frosts came along. Lost a couple of dahlias which didn't store well and rotted. Not bad out of over 30 lots of tubers. Half of a large agapanthus africanus was killed by frost before Lifted it and potted it up. The other half is growing back fine. Lost all my regal pelargoniums but I should have brought them in the house. I didn't realise they can't go dormant like zonals. Was really gutted at that, cause they were quite pricey.

Pretty much most things have surprised me, agapanthus 'bressingham blue', hostas, astilbes and all my lilies. Not massively tender but just late starters I guess.
I'm so glad I have a greenhouse, can't imagine life without it now, sad or what!

My pittosporum is still in intensive care after suffering what I believe to be wind damage.
Haven't lost a lot because I didn't bring a lot with me and there wasn't anything much here.

I've lost both my young Fuschia Microphylla's. One was in a largish pot, the other in the ground. The one in the ground was fine but I had to dig it out a couple of months ago because the bed it was in had to be cleared for the removal of a telegraph pole (probably on Thursday). It's since died having been planted in a pot temporarily. I don't seem to have much luck with these as I've lost them before, so don't think I'll bother again. I also lost my second Cistus to wind damage over the winter, the wind tore the whole plant from it's roots leaving them in the ground.

On a brighter note I grew some dwarf Eryngium's from seed early last year, only two germinated and barely made it above soil in there pots. Considering them failures I left them to their own devices in small pots outside on the patio. They're both now shooting and looking healthy. :)

By the sounds of it we have been largely lucky then

I found Oxalis triangularis "Cupido" shoots coming through today. I hadn't even considered that one surviving.

My garden is blooming lovely already :blue thumb:
The birds dug out some bulbs in my planter again though, and I lost the top half of my 'cloth of gold' in the wind .
My Asiatic lilies are shooting up, and there seems to be twice as many as I planted last year .
All my plants seem to have grown since last year. My Salix tree is much bigger too!

Im a bit concerned about my wisteria amythest falls. It had lots of silver furry buds on it and hasnt not done a thing yet and the buds have dissapeared. Scrapped away some bark and its still alive but not showing any signs on life at all

Hoping i dont lose it going to give it a feed to see if it helps but i feat it may not recover
