Going off on a bit of a tangent.... What do people feel about candidates who are not from your area.
Out of the 8 in our constituency 4 were from other areas, we even had 1 from Oxford and 1 from south Wales. I wonder if they've ever spent more than a couple of hours here.....

Mine has a weekend cottage around here. Must say that the roads in its local vicinity are probably the best in the county (which actually means the only good ones in the county)!!

I don't think it should be allowed, Anthony, to be honest. Only a locally resident rep can truly stand for the position. The answer is obvious............don't vote for them.:dunno::coffee::snork:

I pay over £1000 my house is only band B. They have cut everything. closed the council offices apart fro 4 centres, Mad loads redundant even the \hackney cab inspectors was cut by half loads of redundancies my friend husband was a senior hackney inspector he got made redundant and now has a part time job as a lecturer his wife is an administrator in another council office she has had to apply every year for her job and is clinging on by finger tips closed all the elderly clubs only kept libraries open by sharing accommodation with the police, loads of police civilians mad redundant. Libraries cut staff by half. we only get fortnightly bin removals. We have had 58% cuts there is nothing else left to cut unless they stop social care all together, roads not repaired now. I think it is awful how we have all been treated yet they gave them selves a 10% pay rise, subsidised drinks in the commons, generous expenses allowances that half of them cheat by over they say the conservatives will stay in power according to the exit poll they will destroy us here in the north west God help us!

4 a.m. Exit polls still showing Conservatives with a eventual bigger proportion of the seats than at first thought. Disaster for Labour in Scotland, disaster for LibDems everywhere.

Still a long time to go to see what actually happens.

Me: I have a comfortable seat, with my feet up and working my way through my four mugs of warm water.

                Has the world changed? No.

Do I think the result will make a great deal of difference? No.

Do I think my vote made a difference on a national or local scale? I can hope it did, but only time will tell.

Will my plants and weeds continue to be totally oblivious of what's happening? Yes! So, in a few hours I'll be back out there tending to the plants and removing pernicious weeds (all the grass has been cut and trimmed).

I hope the world situation improves but have serious doubts!

6 a.m. It looks as though Conservatives are heading for an overall majority. They're predicting them having one seat less than an overall majority but that is likely to be sufficient if Sinn Fein state they will not sit in Parliament.

If that happens I think it has surprised everyone. :noidea:

I'm pleased to say that the dirty tricks department in our constituency failed :blue thumb: and the £6,500 lashed out on the dirty tricks was wasted. :heehee:

I think I've had about three hours' sleep :snooze: cos I've been watching it on and off all night.

I am delighted that the Conservatives are performing so well. I do think though that we should have proportional representation. In percentage of votes terms UKIP have approx 1.5m votes so far, yet only one MP, whereas SNP have a similar number and over 50. That needs to change.

Looking at our local statistics, our MP doubled his majority.

UKIP candidate increased his share of the vote from 3.6% to 16.3%,
LibDem was wiped out and polled less than the greens.

A pretty reasonable turnout of 65%

In our village - but not my constituency - the sitting member was elected for the 10th time with a majority of 25,000 :rolleyespink: and a turnout of 71%

I'm not. The NHS was a good idea whilst it lasted.

The election is there to vote for somebody to represent your area at the seat of government. So the MP should reflect the political mood of that area. The MPs collectively then reflect the mood of the country as a whole.
If we go with PR we may as well do away with MPs (and leave the local elections to reflect that mood) and just elect a central voting body for Westminster. All it would achieve is local government being at odds with national government.
I believe that a lot of things need changing but this is one that I personally feel is best left alone.
