    Hello

I am completely new to looking after a lawn but so far I have put down aftercut 4 in 1 treatment to get rid of weeds and moss etc. We had moss covering the lawn and so I have been mainly working on getting rid of that. It has been 2 weeks since applying aftercut 4 in 1 and a lot of the moss has died and we are in the process of raking it out (big lawn). So my questions:

~ On the areas that are left there still seems to be a small amount of moss. Do I wait to re-treat in June (after the mandatory 6 week period) to get rid of it all or do I just try to hand pick what is left out and then move on to overseeding (lots of bare areas now where moss has come out and it looks quite awful). There isn't a lot left but Im not sure if the small amount that is left could spread again and don't want to then damage newly sown grass.....?

My concern is having to wait to overseed too long and Spring turning to Summer and it no longer being a good time to overseed?

~ If it IS ok to just remove by hand the remaining moss (not a lot at all) and then move on to overseeding...how do I go about this? Is it ok to overseed and then look to fertilise after or do I need to fertilise what is left first to help it repair after vigorous raking? At what point in this process do I aerate (manually with a garden fork)? Is aftercut 3 day green a sufficient fertiliser? Can I apply aftercut 3 day green so soon after having applied the 4 in 1 (its only been 2 weeks)?

ARGHHHH!!! :gaah: So you can see my dilemmas! Just don't want to get it all wrong and really damage the lawn.

Thank you in advance for any advice...it is really very much appreciated.

    Hi @JoeyJoJo :)
Have you visited the lawn section?
I have been in your situation too, but managed to muddle through it on my own somehow.
I raked and scraped most of my moss out, then seeded it. I mixed the seed with some top soil, then added more seed on top of that.
I then left it to get going :)
I have no idea if this is good advice :roflol: , as I am new to it all too, but it worked for me :)
Someone will no doubt help you with top advice very soon :blue thumb:

Hi! I havnt visited the lawn section....couldn't find one!

That's exactly what Ive been doing so far...muddling through on my own using common sense. I was googling how/when to do various things but was starting to get a lot of conflicting advice. Some say fertilise before overseeding, some say fertilise after overseeding etc etc. I just don't know lol

This was my lawn when I started work on it. You can see the area I raked out and scraped, and seeded. I get impatient, but it soon grows :)
There were other areas I did too. GCJOJO1.jpg

You sound very much like me......im very impatient and am struggling with the time its taking with it all! Didn't want a rubbish looking lawn for summer but I guess ive started now.......lol

Attached photo is before I even started anything. Looks rubbish..... but since then I have put down the 4 in 1 stuff which made it greener and killed the moss etc.....and I have now decimated it to within an inch of its life with raking out the moss and now it looks worse than before I started lol *sigh*

Hello JoeyJoJo & a very warm :sign0016: to the forum. It's always lovely to use new members, we are a friendly bunch, there's lots of very knowledgeable people on here Do ask as many questions as you need to.
My hens have scratched out all the moss in my lawn, I still have weeds because I can't put anything on the lawn with my free ranging hens! It sounds like you are doing all the right things to your lawn, I think often with a lawn it's patience (something im a bit short of :rolleyespink:).

I think you will be able to recover it personally. Mine has looked pretty rough in its time.
I have never known the best course of action regarding overseeding grass areas, so I usually rake it, water it (hose), then spread seed and hope for the best :snork:
I took that photo above in late June, and it grew well (hope that helps).
You will probably get some good advice later today/tonight.

Thanks for the welcome! Sounds like I need to get some hens then to rid me of this moss once and for all!

Ah yes....patience.....something im very much lacking at the moment! Just getting frustrated that my lawn is looking worse than when I started!

From what I have actually read from google..... I am going to have to finish raking out the moss/pick out remaining stubborn bits by hand, manually aerate (garden fork) to help with the moss problem and to let the seed fall into etc etc, water a bit and then seed. Not entirely sure whether to fertilise or not etc

Ahhhh....if I don't get any advice in the next day or two i'll just have to make it up as I go along lol
