I just picked up a Morello cherry tree for free from Homebase. It was originally £30 but I got it in exchange for emptying my loose change into the charity tin. Discontinued lines are free-donation to charity, at least at my local store. (They also have some decent non-gardening stuff for free, behind the checkouts.)

My local Homebase used to be a wealth of bargains until a nasty, mean new manager got in charge and put a stop to tubs of freebies and super bargain end of line reductions (their reductions also work in conjunction with multi-saves, getting some stuff down to pennies!).

Something to watch out for is when they give away all their remaining seed potatoes and onion setts, just pull off the spud shoots and the setts can be close planted to produce 'spring' onions.

I also got a lovely bare-rooted one from Asda for £5 last autumn! Unlike the others, this one was like a brush, with several side branches and a dead leading shoot. It's fan-training beautifully against a fence. Bargain! So do keep an eye out wherever you're shopping.

Overheard a couple in Homebase today being told their big bulb bowls were free in exchange for a donation to charity, so picked up 5 for friend and I...both of us, I hasten to add are skint and I did donate.

Our main branch of Homebase is closing . I know that B and Q are closing quite a few of their stores also. The Wigan B n Q is a huge warehouse type store , but I only visit that about a tenth of the times I used too . Usually I find about 90% of my DIY needs cheaper online or at Screwfix et al ( Screwfix is owned by B n Q and is 200 metres away in Wigan ! )So why are the big DIY sheds struggling ? Are we letting our abodes fall into rack and ruin ?

...I live in a rather sad area. My local Homebase and B&Q are heaving at the weekends, with cars queuing to get in.

I have just started working at a Homebase whilst at uni for summer and I managed to pick up sone bargains at the end of shifts. Got a Morello and Stella cherry tree for 99p each!

A few weeks ago those vouchers for 2 x £3.50 free bedding plants were printing off with the till receipts. They stopped but they seem to have started again but this time with a min spend of £10 on other plants to qualify.

                  Nice one Rob!

(Spend over £10 on plants?....haha, I did spend 10p on clearance leek seedlings at Homebase a week ago!)

I love a bargain! I never understand why the reduce the plants - they always seem fine (not that I am complaining)! 10p?! :wow:
