I noticed a rose growing under the fence a while back and asked my neighbour if he had one the other side of the fence and he said no. So i yanked this bit of rose out the ground and it popped out easily and had a clean end with no roots.

So i quickly popped it into a pot that one of the perennial plug plants hadn't survived in (i know bad gardening practice but i was exhausted)

Anyway i expected it to die and well its about a month later and it looks fine and appears to have new growth

So as it has survived i fancy seeing what it will look like so what can i do to get it to thrive?

Altho i just thought i presumed it was a rose and it might not be lol

I would of cut it below the green part of the stem, then took some of the bottom leaves off at the nodes? and planted it deep, maybe it would re root from there, good luck :) nothing nicer than a free rose bush :wub2:

      Thanks joolz

I dont want to start cutting and stuff now as it seems to have re rooted itself anyway. I gave it a gental tug and it doesnt shift so it must have roots holding it in

Dips have a look further away for the original rose. With the amount of thorns it has I suspect it's either a Rugosa or a wild rose, maybe a Dog rose. Either way they tend to send up suckers quite a way from the original plant. :)

I will try and keep an eye out for one but not seen anything yet. This has appeared under the new fence that went up in september and was in the area where there was a holly and fir tree and icy hedge. I had seen a hydrangea growing there but no rose ever. I also saw nothing when digging out the new bed.

Thats why i asked nextdoor if he had a rose his side because my garden had no plants in previously where as my old neighbour worked hard in his garden.

Doubt i will find anything my side unless something starts growing under the fence again.

I know my neighbour has one rose and a weigelia he left in when the cleared the whole garden but the rose was further down the fence and im pretty sure when i saw it it was a big flowering rose

      I dunno

Should i wait till is see roots coming out the pot and then posible pot it on and plant it a big deeper?

Hi @Dips if it were me I would do what you have suggested above, treat as a container grown Rose,as you could then plant it at any time in the future;)

          thank you @wiseowl

I kind of accidentally pulled it out the pot lol im not even sure how i did it. anyway its got one little root off the side of the stem so hoping i havent just really messed it up

I shoved i back in the pot so it was deeper so we will see if it continues to live lol

@Sheal had a look for any other suckers or anything sprouting and there is nothing down the whole side of the garden.

Strange! We'll have to wait and see what it's like when it blooms. Nurture it well Dips. :)
