I know this is a Daily Fail article, but bear with me....

A number of things are mentioned in there, but two or three things in particular get my attention, the main one being the reference to Fukushima and power generation/consumption

Firstly, I think the Fukishima thing has been blown out of all proportion; I am not for one second saying that it isn't a desperate situation, however the thing that everyone seems to conveniently forget is the fact that the plant withstood an earthquake on a massive scale (pretty much unprecedented) and then another equally massive tsunami; the nail in the coffin, as far as I can see, was the decision to vent the hydrogen being produced into the enclosed atmosphere inside the plant which then led to the explosion -- human misjudgement maybe? Anyway, I fail to be convinced that nuclear power is 'all that is evil' as it is often portrayed.

With reference to general power generation - the main principles of power generation is to burn 'fuel' to heat water to create steam which will then spin turbines to make the electricity; so, as we have mountains of tyres, plastic computer and TV casings just lying about and contaminating the earth - - could they not be used as fuel? Obviously, there would need to be controls to capture a load of nasties from the burning process, but surely it has to be a better option than having mountains of the things just lying about?

I agree with you :blue thumb:

Also, I tend to find that what little I see of that 'newspaper' makes me wonder about the sensationalism of their 'reporting'. Admittedly, most of those photos are showing sad, and disturbing situations but some of them are being dealt with and others are not controllable - but a lot are if there was the will to do so.

One thing that hit me when I played the video was the 29 second advert at the beginning of it. They were advertising products that are made from some of the things that the article is implying shouldn't be used!

The problem with burning all that waste is that it produces CO2 leading to more global warming. If we could recycle the waste into other products then it would be a win win situation: less waste and less raw materials needing to be produced.

Well this is only my personal opinion, but I think it has become fashionable to call the Daily Mail, Daily Fail, Daily Wail or whatever, because often they report the blunt truth and people feel very uncomfortable reading the truth. The pictures are horrifying but tell the real story.
We are destroying the planet, and we are doing nothing (on a World scale) to stop this.

Surely we could devise a way to 'harvest' the CO2 at point of production thought - once compressed, it is after all a handleable liquid, and is widely used as an industrial solvent

I dont think I would want a power station burning tyres on my doorstep,:snork:
I do think the whole CO2 thing is a bit overdone these days.

But it does bring in money when you can tax it.;)

An 'expert', talking on the radio the other day, said that 15% of our electricity is now produced by solar panels.

My solar panels avoided the release of 15.94lb of carbon dioxide today. :pathd:

I read the Mail online purely because the format is more user friendly but always take what is said with a huge pinch of salt. You rarely get the full story as they tend to sensationalise and emphasise whatever will give them the headline.

They have been trying to do this at a number of power stations, breweries and chemical plants. Among the problems is the volume of CO2 produced compared with the amount we can recycle or put into storage.
Unfortunately growing potatoes in used car tyres only uses a small proportion and at the end of the summer you still have the used tyres to reuse/recycle.
