Clerodendron ugandense

They are SO stunning I may have another go ... :DOH:

 

I might give Ugandense a try, I have only grown it in a Tropical House (similar to Oxford Botanic) many years ago along with Thomsoniae, Speciosum and Speciossisimum. When they grow well they can take over.

 

I thought that this young cutting (18 month or so) of C.ugandense was a goner after the freeze in the greenhouse over the winter. But I stuck with it watering it occasionally and it is coming back from the roots...................

 

I bought one last week Keith, it's in the new purchases thread, a bargain at £2.99.

 

LongK - I am delighted to see that it has come back. Some of these tender plants are more robust that we think.

I find that it isn't just the winter temperature that is the problem - but the watering. I have had 2 or 3 things die over the winter from either too much or too little water - I am not sure which. But I am sure the temperature of min of 10C was enough. One was my Cubanola - grown after inspiration from you, another was Ravenala.

Another death was Thunbergia alata. A purchased one, in a particularly good colour, died, but a whishy washy coloured one from seed has survived. Its usually grown as an annual, but I always thought that was because it was fast growing and most people didn't have the facility to overwinter it. All my other Thunbergias have sailed through the winter.

Strongy - I have always admired C. speciosissimum pictures. Is it an good plant to grow, and what is the difference between it and speciosum?

And did C. thomsoniae lose all its leaves over winter? Having bought a small one in leaf 16 months ago in January for 45p, I bought it home and it then proceeded to lose all its leaves. I thought it was dead but it started to regrow later. Currently it is again sitting leafless.

The mother plant has taken a few degrees of frost before but it's the first time that one of the children has.

I've lost Cubanola seedlings of up to a year old for no apparent reason. I suspect they may have been overwatered.
