Can't win in this weather, the planted out ones are just sitting there in the cold wind and the ones left in the greenhouse got cooked yesterday

Here are mine. I sowed too late so they are still tiny. Only wish they have time to mature their fruits. The weather isn't helping either. Not having a green house, I put them out in daytime and bring them back in my bedroom at night.

They look nice little plants. Once the temp. racks up a bit, they'll romp away. A bit of weak tomato food will be welcomed in a couple of weeks time when they are out and about . What variety are you growing ?

Thanks Jenny! the ones in the pots are sungold, gardener's delight and sweet aperitif. I plan to move them into the ground or large bags. The ones in the tray are balconi red which is a dwarf variety. They will probably end up in 8 inch pots

2° C at my plot early this morning, there's no way I'm planting any of my toms out in the open for a while yet.

Got 10 deg C overnight in my 3 x 6m polytunnel, so I've started planting tomatoes (+ chillies, French beans and climbing courgettes) in my polytunnel borders, hoping the very cold nights are over, but not planting outdoors for 10 - 14 days.

I've had courgettes and squashes outdoors for 2 wks now, and some more cold tolerant tomatoes outdoors for a month. But then I tell my plants that they either have to be well hard or die. (And I have the more tender varieties still in the greenhouse.)

You are far braver than me Cinnamon. How are your plants doing? The night time forecast temperatures for next week here in Worcestershire are 8/9c. Earlier this week they were forecast to be only around 5c so the Met Office are more optimistic. I'm away for a few days next week and was hoping to plant out some tomatoes this weekend but I think I am going to bottle it still.

They are fine and growing nicely. The tomatoes are flowering, as are the squashes (which have a bubble-wrap wind break). My greenhouse is so exposed that it doesn't make any difference to the minimum temp. they experience!

I don't know if I am worthy enough to post on this thread this year as all my plants are bought from a nursery  (been away a lot), but I bought a small number of tomato plants (and squash and courgette etc ) just over a week ago and plonked them all straight out in raised beds to fend for themselves, seem to be doing ok so far.
Bear in mind I think this part of the country has had fairly mild nights compared to other places.

The squash and courgette are likely to be a bit more sensitive. I've found that protecting them from cold wind helps, using a wind break made from bubble wrap, or polythene. Tomato varieties do vary in their cold sensitivity. Those developed for more continental climates (N America, or E Europe) are more cold tolerant cos they have long cold winters and a short spring before going into summer. I kept my less cold tolerant ones indoors for several weeks after the others went outside or into the greenhouse...they looked really miserable when they went outside on a warmer day. Of course, if we do have a very late frost, then I'm stuffed! I check the medium range weather forecast before putting stuff out cos they need a week to acclimatise, then check the next week isn't very cold. I'll post some snaps tomorrow, but all are growing outside. The potimarron squashes have female flowers.

Our temps have been in the low 40s F at night and I am running no heat in the greenhouse. The residual heat from the day carries over to keep the plants happy. I am, hopefully, looking forward to an early bumper crop from the greenhouse. As an experiment I have a selection of both greenhouse and regular varieties in there: Tropic, (greenhouse), Super Beefsteak (regular), Mortgage Lifter (heirloom) and Arbason (greenhouse). They all are doing great at this point; lots of blossoms and setting nice fruit. All seems to be going too well so far, but I am waiting for one of Murphy's laws to kick in.

New York is not paradise for growing tomatoes. I had to cover everything outdoors last night, as we had a frost and freeze warning.
