        Hi Redstar I have the Pentax K5. I've been a Pentax Fan for decades and have had several of the film models, then had a few compact cameras, and then liked the K5 enough to get it.

        One of the great things about Pentax is that they've been making high quality lenses for decades and so there are a great many old "glass" of different apertures and focal lengths that will fit the Pentax K mount cameras.........which means I now have 22 Pentax lenses in my collection. But, for me, the K5 gives great images, feels comfortable in the hand, and is easy to use.:love30::thumbsup::snork:

          I've moved away from a DSLR to something smaller I can slip into my pocket and carry everywhere:

          Mostly I use it in Auto but I sometimes use it in Manual mode if I'm after a particular shot. The best feature is it's very fast f1.8 lens as I take loads of indoor snaps of my kids, it copes in poor light without a flash so I can get natural looking portraits without red eye or squinting.

              My Tamron SP AF 70-300 F/4-5.6 Di VC USD is a permanent fixture covers everything I need and if it doesen't on the rare occasion I have the Canon 18 x55 VC lens in my pocket;)

                Just as an add on then, Redstar. Have a look at the Pentax K50 range and also the Ricoh cameras as they are great cameras and user friendly.:coffee::snork:

                the reason I am asking is, this August will be doing a bucket trip to Alaska, on a small ship. so will get up close and personal to what is out there. My little old Kodak, while, for me it is so easy to use etc. I know my not be worthy of the sights I want to capture. But I really don't want one I have to fuss with, just aim and shoot. I can handle moving a lens out further if necessary. Or changing "one" button to an up close feature--like flowers. But that is it. so I will make a list of all your suggestions and hope to find a shop that has most of them to look at.
