I was told by someone the other day that if you are in receipt of a pension, you lose the single person's reduction on council tax. Is this true and if so, does it apply only if you have a private pension or if you're getting just the state pension?

    that sounds very strange

surely if you are a single person in the house you would still get the single person reduction

If you are on benefits you still get the reduction and then the rest you don't pay anyway as thats taken off because of the benefits

i know my council also offer reductions on low incomes as well as single person so it ends up on top of

Tell that "someone", merleworld, that they are wrong:nonofinger:. I am a widower living in my own House and I pay my rates at the single person's discount of 25% despite having several pensions, a State Pension, and a wage retainer for consulting work. Council Tax is rated at the type and size of the House not the size of the income of the person.
So a single person, being the only person residing in a House is entitled to, and gets, the 25% discount on the Council Tax rates.:coffee::snork:

In my opinion pensioners who have worked hard all their lives should pay NO council tax at all ! Especially given the low pensions we have in this country !

Sorry Charlie996, I disagree I think it should be based on ability to pay not age.
Why should I have to contribute when I get £72 per week and a rich pensioner get all their services for free.

No, I'm in my early 50's. I cannot work because I had an accident plus I have arthritis in 5 different joints.

Hi Anthony, sorry to hear about your arthritic condition. Like most things Pensions and Council Tax is a complex and sometimes controversial subject with those on a low income struggling to just survive. If you just take the State Pension on it's own then the British pension is fourth from the bottom in a world wide table even with the recent raise.

The UK is also in a similar position when it comes to disability pay and I think we can all recognise that £72 a week doesn't recognise the outgoings faced by ordinary people. But at least GC is free and will make you smile and welcome.

              Hi Armandii,
It's not your average pensioner I'm talking about, sorry if I gave the wrong impression. It's the likes of Alan Sugar, Nick Hewer, Tom Jones etc that get my goat.

So you Anthony are assuming I was talking or suggesting Alan Sugar and co should be included in not having to pay council tax ..

There are many pensioners who have worked all their lives only to be paid what is a pittance of a pension.

They should not have to pay council tax IMHO. Neither should any pensioners whether they have made a few quid along the way. Those who have earnt have paid in enough already .

I would think by the time I reach pensionable age there will be no pensions or at least no money left to pay for them.

                I
I wasn't assuming anything, I just think as I stated above that it should be based on ability.

PS... I have no idea what IMHO means, can you tell me please.
