Although we keep promising ourselves that we will cut back and make things easier for ourselves in the garden, we seem to be doing the opposite!

Nearly forty years ago we planted a Leylandii hedge as our neighbours at the time had the whole length full of very untidy shrubs and trees. We thought we would be able to keep our side nice and neat, which worked for a long time.

The trees grew tall so we started to hedge some of them and leave others (the tall conifers in the background)

Then, a couple of years ago we decided to make it all hedge

But changed our minds last year and, as our neighbour had now put a fence in, we started to remove it completely.

    Some was removed last Summer

and the job was finished this Spring. We kept some of the wood chippings from the stump grinding and dug in a lot of compost and 20 x 70 litre bags of horse manure :phew:. We can collect as much horse manure as we wish from a farm two villages away.

In April we started to plant the bed (55ft long) using plants that were either dug out from other parts of the garden or Mrs Shiney had in the nursery beds for sale on Open Day. A lot of the plants were very small or just waiting for their Spring growth. We only bought one plant :blue thumb:
The Nigella were self-seeded from the compost.

Two weeks ago we filled in with more of our own plants.

I'll continue by showing each fence panel in a shot and then closer shots of the plants that are in front of it.

:wow:, I hadn't appreciated just how much work had gone into your new flower bed, you two work incredibly hard in the garden. I'm looking forward to seeing it again next year :hapydancsmil:

Looking good. Its amazing the amount of light that comes in when an old hedge is removed freeing up so much room for colours.
