The second sample picture does look like self-heal. I don't think it's chickweed, or the related sp. in your second photo, which is mouse ear, I reckon. My first thought was enchanter's nightshade, but that'd only look like that if it was growing in the shade...here's some I've just grabbed that was growing in the shade:

The photos in my last post are images of chickweed from the Internet. Cinnamon, it's not the same as your photo, and grows in full sun.

    Damianevans.....I am now very confused.
There is no scale on your very first pic.
I thought leaves seemed a fair size...much larger than chickweed.
Stellaria media....common name Chickweed has hairy stems. Cannot see any hairs in pic 1.

Chickweed is really easy to pull out the ground with thin weak roots

Have you any weed left ?
Can you add another clear pic with a ruler besides it for scale.

Hi. The second pic has my hand in it. The sample of weed is the same piece in both pictures. The leaves are quite small. I've pulled all the weed out now, but will post another pic when it grows back.

It's not a lawn weed, more likely something spreading from the border. Another possibility is the chinese lantern, Physalis alkekengi

Ha, Damian, you win the 'Beat the Board' virtual trophy! We've usually got the answer well before page 2! It's a good one, whatever it is.

Hi. It is not close to any borders. In fact, it's the furthest away it can be from a border.

Thank you Damianevans for new pic with coin for scale.
I had the scale all wrong.
JWK and Cinnamon may be spot on.

        Prunella vulgaris could well fit.
        Stems are square..leaves are opposite.
Flowering stems would be the final proof.

Do please take a few seconds to look at Brian Johnstons stunning series of pics taken under a microscope....

Yes it will be very obvious when it flowers, which won't be long.

Not sure the stems are square though, I'll check. They won't flower as I've put down weed and feed on the lawn.:)
