How Good is my Photo..?? Discussion.. Any tips, Criticisms or Ideas Please..!!

Beautiful shot Wiseowl really captured the colour and texture.

 

Lovely shot LyndaG im mainly point and shoot aswell I do try and play with the settings from time to time but with wildlife you dont get the time to get the shot you want...

 

I had to look it up aswell just so i spelt it right yea the whole bird would of looked good i was just getting as close to the bird as i could to get real detail .

 

Bex...... I'm not sure how you were intending to capture the scene in your picture so I don't really know what comment to make apart from the obvious light issue. Sorry!

Michael......That's the first time I've seen a blue Ringneck parakeet! I thought you'd changed the colour for a moment. I would have taken this shot with the camera on end.

Lynda was there digital manipulation after this shot was taken?

 

I did get a few shots but as it was flapping about most of the time so it was pretty much hit and miss

Now in my eyes I was pretty pleased with this shot so I sent it to my son who is a brilliant amateur photographer and he found fault with it, what do you all think of it please?

Well @Sheal. I've looked at this cutie long and hard and can't think what your son found fault with. The DOF is great, the pic is sharp. So I'm going to hazard a guess. Is it that the subject is centred and you didn't observe the rule of thirds? I love the pic! X

 

I took this today, not for any type of artistic integrity, lol, just for fun. The dog was called Miss Marple and she is 2. Her Mum and Dad were lovely, friendly folk and Miss M's fur was as soft as velvet. Oh, and she had green eyes! Amazing little dog x

 

Thanks Michael and Lynda. I've looked at it long and hard too and I know the fault my son pointed out, but don't see how I can correct it. I'll leave it as a mystery for the time being to let others make comment.

Lynda the thirds rule applies mainly to scenery. You can't do that with a 'portrait' shot.

No it's not a selfie Armandii, I'm not that slim! I leave replying to the rest of your post until tomorrow as it has some significance to my sons comments.

I don't change my shots in any way apart from size for GC, so no the picture hasn't been cropped.

 

Got to disagree with the rule of thirds not applying to portrait shots. I think it certainly does, though not in all instances. The same applies to landscapes - mostly it does but sometimes it doesn't.
In portraiture in general, having the eyes of the subject in the top third draws the viewer's eyes to the face and establishes a contact between subject and viewer.
The ROT is a good general guide though not one to be rigidly followed.
Here's a crop of Sheal's meercat. Just a quickie and hope you don't mind me messing with your photos Sheal. But this crop puts the eyes into the top third and in my opinion for what it's worth, focuses on the 'character' without the distraction of the lower body.
Not a perfect crop as done in a hurry!
