Canna Virus Woes !

I haven't posted this is the Canna section as I know it can be spread very easily
My gorgeous C. Bengal Tiger started looking very sorry for themselves mid week . Inspection yesterday showed leaves with brown dashed veins and brown edges - as web photo below . I presume this is the dreaded virus
So nothing I can do but pull them up and bin them ? My C.Tropical are about 15 feet away and look OK fingers crossed . How did I catch the virus ? I never buy any Cannas or have them gifted to me on purpose. Is it carried by insects in some way?

How did you get it though. That page says aphids and not the soil which was my first reaction but I'll pursue it - were they repotted this year and if so what did you use? If an infected Canna was commercially composted down for MPC I still wonder if it could be carried in the soil.

 

I've always though the virus was spread by insects.
Most plant viruses are.
That is why, seed grown plants are virus free, until insects attack

 

I grew everything from Rhizomes planted in new MPC . They were grown indoors and moved out to the GH in May . The hardened off. So I think it must be carried by insects . It has effected all my Bengals , 3 at the back one at the front. I need to check on the 3 I gave away. The Canna Tropical look OK so far. Peculiar that it seems to be selective ? Anway I'll pull them up this morning and put them in the general waste bin , not the green bin.

 

Are there any other Canna in growth locally this early? I know the accepted wisdom but I do wonder about this cheap MPC that is produced so fast nowadays. All mine are in homemade compost to cover my ass.

Sad but the only option. I had to bin all mine several years ago.

 

How many did you lose @longk ? I know some GC members have well over 50 . I think Joolz had over 150 . It must be soul destroying if you lose all your stock . Touch wood I have only lost 4 hopefully.

 

Just nine or ten as I recall. Canna were the start of my interest in tender, exotic or rare plants.

I lost all mine I had over 20 different ones to the virus.

I haven't bothered since I even remember which one it was "Cleopatra" which cost me £15.00 at the time.
and yes insects is the main culprit

If me I would give them all spray just in case

 

Thanks for all your inputs , as you say not much you can do except bin them. I'll start again from seed next year !

 

I tend to think that virus seen this early is likely to be from infected plants last year.
So new plants showing signs are very likely to have picked up the virus last summer.

Aphids are a pain,i got to thinking that because nobody grows cannas near me i could be safe but after reading up on the blighters they can get in your garden just by being on any plant we fetch home from a plant sales place plus blown on a wind which we have a lot early on so we are never safe from a virus!
Ive sprayed all my cannas, roses,cherry tree(small) and others i can think of with neem oil and soapy water just to deter them
Not had a virus sign yet for 2yrs but i know its a matter of time x
