Hi guys, I'm Beth and I'm currently renovating my garden. I know, in June, really? But I've only recently got into gardening after helping my mum do hers up and plant all her bits and bobs and now I'm wanting to do mine.

My garden doesn't have the greatest quality soil and so I think I'm going to topsoil it but I hope it's not too late. I know I can plant later in the year but am I too late to actually start it?

Forums are a lot better to get opinions because I think any company will just want me to buy their products.

So if anyone has any advice that'd be great!!

Thank you & it's lovely to be here :spinning:

      Hi Bethany,
      Welcome to Gardeners Corner.

Now is quite a good time to start planning for next year, plenty of seeds you can sow ( I've currently got over 20 sorts on the go).
Also a good time for cuttings etc

Good luck and remember we're all here for you :)

Hi Beth :spinning: you have certainly come to the right place for advice, like you I'm still doing in June:) so hopefully, can expect a good garden next year :)

I've used a lot of annuals to bring colour into the garden this year hoping next year, after all the planting, it will bring its own colour.

Everyone is so helful and friendly :grphg: and I'm certain all your questions will be answered and look forward to watching your project grow :dbgrtmb:

Hello Bethany and welcome to the forum.

Now is a great time to plant things, so go for it.

Just wondering what your soil is like? Maybe just adding some compost/manure would be a cheaper/better solution. Another idea rather than spreading new topsoil everywhere is just to improve the planting holes, i.e. dig in compost for each individual plant, this will save a lot of time too.

Welcome to GC @Bethany Walker :sign0016:

You will get plenty of good advice from the ladies and gents here, and hopefully a load of good banter along the way; we love photos here, so feel free to post them - not only does that satisfy our inner nosey blighters, but it also helps others to help you as it gives an idea of what your garden looks like.

Another good tip is to put your location in your profile - don't worry, we are not looking for street names or door numbers, just an area will do, as it helps sometimes to give an understanding of your soil and climate.

And lastly, always remember the only silly question is the one you DON'T ask - - none of us are here to judge or laugh at you, and everyone will be more than happy to help; we were/are all learners together, and there is no expectation for anyone to know all the answers. If you are unsure of anything, just ask! :)

Hi and welcome! I really hope it's not too late, as I'm in exactly the same situation (except with no topsoil, because it was all removed 2 years ago :frown: ) so here's to garden improvements in June! Looking forward to seeing what you decide to do :)

                Hello and welcome!!

I can relate to the "when to start?", and also to the "what, no soil?!". We moved here on 1st August, but I still put as many plants in the ground as I could - easier to keep them watered in the ground, than in quick-to-dry-out pots. In digging 'oles, I discovered that we have sand, rather than soil. I have coped with this by digging v large planting holes, filling them with compost (we were fortunate to have a huge old compost pile in an overgrown corner), mixing in to the existing soil with a garden fork, then planting in that. Seems to have worked!!

welcome to the Forum Bethany, I'm quite new too.

                  Some 'shorts' of advice.....

If you see something you like somewhere make a note of it and take a photo... also a cutting if you can. You'll be pleased to have one of your own in your garden.

Take a drive into the country to pick up some Manure and find a 'hidden' spot for it in a corner of the garden to mature for a year; that'll improve your soil no end. Have some empty 25Kg Builders Bags in the car (it often works on a 'take a full one free, but leave an empty one please' basis) and something to prevent any smelly liquids messing up your car; or hitch up a trailer if you've got one

Do a bit at a time; over-doing it is probably the quickest & easiest way for it to stop being fun

At the moment I'm delighted with the progress of a Rhododendron I bought, inspired by one in the Holiday Park we stayed at recently (see my previous posts)
