That hard frost certainly hit the Gunnera Manicata .... the first time this has happened in 20 years. However ... I am sure it will recover just fine :)

Thats exactly how mine looks. Nice and protected all winter ,unwrapped it ,2 days later severe frost. 80 out of 100 leaves blackened. The beast will survive no doubt.
It will probably need another machete pruning in the fall lioke last year.

The one I relocated seems to be doing ok...but I do have some yellowing on some leaves. All it needs now is more warmth I guess.

@whis4ey ..Hi sam,i read somewhere by cutting the flowers/seed heads off it makes puts more energy into leaf growth? Any truth in that do you know? ..i doubt your leaves and height can get any bigger thou :heehee:

I have never heard that, but it would appear possible enough
I have just cut two very large hunks off this year as it is getting far too big. Another large hunk has to come off next year. I had to get help to lift them and take them to the Council yard for disposal. Last time I did that I dumped them in the next field and they took root and have been thriving since LOL

Ours has been in the ground for about 14 yrs,it's 25 ft in spread, I take cuttings from the edges that keeps it in it's place ☺ 20150612_200616.jpg
