What's Buzzing or Flying near you today... 2015

Came across these two on a nature walk this morning and we weren't sure if they were mating Horseflies or something else as they look so different to each other?
Maybe it's the camera angle.

 

Hobby, this afternoon at Morden Bog right overhead so all I got was a silhouette, you will have to take my word for it. One day I'll get a decent shot.

We had these in the UK last year , is it laying eggs on fennel ?

 

Yes, @Spruce . We had them last year too, and the caterpillars still didn't manage to keep my triffid of a fennel under control. Lawn mowing activities were complicated by having to search the surrounding area of grass for full-grown caterpillars wanting to pupate somewhere.

Reminder to self - need to find out best place to move any rescued pupae to, for about 2 months' time.

General warning - swallowtail caterpillar photos approaching!!

 

bring 'em on Sian. Very rare to see them in the UK anymore. I'm a tad envious,

These two live on the Orchard farm where the kuny pigs live and the 2 peacocks wander around freely and are quite tame. - especially if you have tit-
bits for them.

House Martins - Maybe they were discussing whether to rebuild the nest in that corner. The owner of the house reluctantly removed that nest early in the year because the main entrance to the house is right underneath. There is still a nest along the wall further to the right which is occupied.

Had this little chap( Juvenile Lesser Spotted Woodpecker)crash into my nut feeder this afternoon so rushed and grabbed my camera and tablet and managed to get some photos of it but when I went out into the garden to see if it was ok as it was sitting on the lawn at the base of the feeder and I was worried that Poppy would get it,it flew into my cherry tree then flew off over the gardens,but the problem with the other gardens is that they don't grow plants or have trees etc so now I am worried a local moggy will catch and eat it

 

Rose Chafer Beetles shining in the sun, first on the Erysimum and later on the Callistemon.
