    Hi,

Rescued these from the owner's greenhouse about a month ago, after she sadly, suddenly & expectantly passed away. Any idea what they are please? She'd reared them from seedlings.

    Bit like a poppy?

Strange plant, it had no flower buds as such, the top leaves started to go blue-purple then sprouted anthers!

Both are within the 30cm height range.

    Many thanks.

JWK is spot on. I grow Cerinthe and thought for years it was Corinthe! spelling is not my strong point. Anyway, if you like it (I do for the foliage alone) it is more or less an annual and with any luck will self seed. Alternative, as I do, I collect the seed and sow the following season so it almost acts as an herbaceous plant for me.

Papaver somniferum form. Annual so you would need to save seeds and it may not come true either.

kr, it looks like your late friend had very refined taste in plants. Those are both quite fancy plants.

          Thanks Cinnamon,

Mum raised all these from seedlings, when she went into hospital her little greenhouse was filled with tiny potted plants ready to be planted out. Sadly mum passed away in little over a week. I couldn't bear to let the plants wilt away so I started planting them out, batch at a time - keeping those still in the greenhouse watered. It took a month, but i got them all out. I remember her saying she wanted the Cerinthe "out the front" to replace some earlier flowering plants, which I cut right back. The poppies I had no idea - why are they white marked in the middle please? Anyway, so I planted the Cerinthe alternately with what turned out to be poppies - all these plants were raised from seed, she spent so much time in the greenhouse over the early spring.

In desperation, I planted these in a grid pattern because these last plants would have probably used up all the soil in their pots soon after - so in they went.

Is the dark one cornflower please?

Yes, that's a cornflower. Those dark shades, like the cerinthe, are fashionable to have mixed among brighter colours. The white on your poppy is an area lacking the red pigment. It will have been carefully saved by the plant breeder to look that way, as plain ones are more common. I'd perhaps have the plants surrounded by bare ground as when you water them the grass will grow very quickly.

            Hi Kr,
The first poppy (red with a white cross) looks like a hybrid called "Danish Flag".

Thanks for the heads up on the poppies :) Yes, intrusive grass is becoming an issue here and there, I will soon be on my hands & knees weeding! :-o
