I have a few volunteer papaver poppies in one of my borders this year, which have been lovely for a couple of weeks now, but have finished flowering now (barring a couple of blooms) and I sort of need the space now to get stuff planted out that is going to fill the display for the rest of the year.

They have some really nice seed heads on them, and I would quite like to save the seeds (not least as a friend has asked for some) - can I whip the seed heads off now and dry them indoors or do I need to leave them on the plant until they ripen and dry?

PS - anyone wanting poppy seeds just drop me a PM :)

I usually wait until the pepper pots have gone brown and crisp and the holes just underneath the pepper pots have started to open and then I sprinkle them.I think if you do them while they are still green the seed won't have had time to mature.

As the time goes on and the pepper pots are starting to dry then you could cut off a long piece of stem with the pepper pots on top and put them in water to finish ripening but I think if you do them straight after petal fall it will be too early:smile:

Thanks @Kandy - I will have to grow the dahlias destined for that spot on in pots for now then - that way I will be able to transfer them with a whole large rootball

I agree with what Kandy said, leave the seedheads on the plant until they ripen and are just starting to open. If you remove them now, the seeds won't mature.
I'd be interested in some seed when its ready please :dancy:.
I have Ladybird poppies (Papaver commutatum "Ladybird") in my garden just now and I bought the seed because I love the contrast between the deep red and black spots on the flowers.
Much to my surprise last year, the flower in my avatar pic grew from the P. commutatum seed. It was the only one though and the plant had flowers in varying shades of pink with white, as in my avatar. This year, seed from the same packet grew properly into poppies with deep red flowers with black spots :snork:.

I'll be delighted to send you some once they ripen @CreakyJoints :) - drop me a PM in a few weeks to remind me though, as I can be a forgetful old fart at times. :old:

Welcome to GC by the way :sign0016: - I am a fellow Scot, although have been exiled in England for over 15 years now. Where in Scotland are you, if you don't mind me asking?

Thank you @fat controller. I'll drop you a PM to remind you in a few weeks...if I remember myself :heehee:

I live in a small village 12 miles south of Edinburgh city centre. Right in the bottom south east corner of Midlothian. About 3 - 4 miles north of Soutra on the A68.

You must be somewhere near Humbie then at a guess? I lived in Musselburgh for a while - my lovley mum still lives in Wallyford. Small world sometimes. :)

Wow ! It is a very small world .
Pathhead to be precise, although I do have an aunt and uncle in Humbie.
Started off in Mayfield until I was 4 years old, then lived in Penicuik. We spent most weekends visiting both grans. My dad's mum lived in Mayfield and my mum's mum lived in Pathhead.
My mum came back to Pathhead (she grew up here) about 12 years ago to look after my gran, then took on the tenancy when my gran died. I came here to live with my mum a couple of years ago because I have arthritis and can't manage some things on my own now.
I'm at the bottom of the village after you drive over the bridge (coming from Dalkeith) :hapydancsmil:

Aye, you are in a lovely part of the world, that is for sure :) I must admit that I miss Scotland (home) on an almost daily basis, but sadly there is neither the jobs nor the money there to warrant moving from here.

*Ahem* ... sorry to interrupt ... :heehee:

I pop mine into a paper bag to finish ripening and to catch all the seeds.

Not necessarily! One seed head will give you thousands of seed - two would give you a couple of thousand ( ish ) ... so, you could just keep 2 or 3 of the poppy plants so the seed heads can develop and pull up/dispose of the others so you could put your dahlias in: win/win :dbgrtmb:

All the poppies are in the north border at the moment which is pretty much full now (barring the pending poppy space), but I still have the south and the west borders to plant up, so I think the best bet is to crack on with those this week and see how the poppies are doing at the end of the planting out process

These are some of mine. They come up every time the soil is turned. I've never scattered seed, they just come. If I want them I leave them, sometimes I need to pull them, they always come back:)
