    Hi guys,

Just been planting a few new plants and dug up a chafer beetle. Please could you recommend/advise what to do as I've heard that these are the pests that can eat away your lawn and leave you having to re turf the whole lot!

    Thanks for your help/advice

      Hi

Only a specialist lawn company can get hold of the chemical to control them, it was with drawn from the shelves a couple of years ago to the likes of you and me

If you can attract starlings or members of the crow family into your garden they will take a lot of the grubs. :)

One of the many signs of grubs are birds that attack the turf as well as mammals. They can do a fair bit of damage as well as the grubs that attack the root system of the grass.
There is a domestic product that can be used but you need to weigh up the cost of this product which is nematode based to that of a company or individual that would use Merit.

I disagree about the birds Highlife. It's not only the most natural way of controlling them but they've not damaged my lawns. I have Starlings and Jackdaws in my garden all year round and anything up to fifty or sixty Starlings at times.

I never said they did, I think I noted it as a sign and it's more badgers and foxes that rip the turf up.

Sorry, I must have mis-read your post. I've not got a problem with badgers and foxes though, there aren't any here. :)

Several lawns I maintain get the Badger treatment and they constantly rip the turf up at set periods of the year. It's not always grubs though, those old worms attract them too.

Yes, I've seen the damage they do, there are members here that have problems with them, deer too.

              Thanks for your help guys.
What do you guys thinks to the domestic nematode based stuff compared to Merit? Is it well worth getting the professionals who are licensed to used Merit in anually to be extra cautious and treat it?
              Thanks

Merit will obtain better results if you do suffer from either chafer or leather jackets but it's a chemical and should only be used if you do have a history or are suffering the side effects of the above.
I very rarely use it but I've seen a well known company use it where it's not needed.
A good company should at least lift some turf in areas where the turf shows damage just to insure it is a bug rather than a plant related problem.
