I decided to scarify one side only, mostly because I am half way through planting out - my theory being that I can continue planting on the side that hasn't been done for the next couple of weeks then switch sides.

I scarified, then overseeded with fresh seed, and then put up bird repellant foil flags (no idea if they will work), and seed was covered with approx 90 litres of fresh compost.

Here is the current state of play:

But scarifying is raking FC. :) The drum with the tines is to allow air to the bottom of the plants. The raking (scarifying) is to remove dead grass and moss.

Yes, the blades will open up the soil a bit more and do a more thorough job of removing unwanted moss etc.

We're probably going to cross posts here FC. :) Did you do the soft shoe shuffle over the ground after laying grass seed, compost etc. to firm it down?

Soft shoe, lady flip flop and fat man kneeling and rolling about all done whilst putting the foil onto the strings; followed up with a damn good soaking with the sprinkler. :blue thumb:

Is that before or after a sniff of the cork? I wish I'd been there with a camera. :heehee:

Chuffin' pigeons keep trying to get my seed despite it being covered.

              I need a gun....

I ran out yesterday evening to scare them off - only wearing my bed shorts as I had just gotten out of the shower - and as I went I was shouting and snarling at them, and all they did was look up at me as if to say "We ain't moving....." thankfully, my wee Smudge ran out behind me, and although he wouldn't go for the birds he ran up the lawn to 'speak' to the dog next door (though a wee hole in the fence) and he scared them off.

Mrs C was at the kitchen window in stitches at me giving it all the loud voice and the pigeons basically ignoring me

You could try investing in a plastic bird of prey and sitting that in the middle FC. Or by some netting and suspend it over the patch like a tent. :)

Well, despite the pigeons best efforts, we seem to be getting somewhere...

The area nearest the camera was pretty much devoid of grass (or anything green) at the start of this process, so I am chuffed that it is sprouting away merrily. Better still, its only been a matter of days, so it should thicken out well too. I am not going to mow anything until the weekend at least to give it a chance

Now's the time to take a gentle stroll over it in flat shoes FC. It breaks and firms the stems to help produce side shoots and thicken up. Don't worry about crushing it, it will come upright again. :)

Thanks @Sheal - I am aiming to remove my sticks and foiled strings tomorrow so I can get cracking on planting up the south border, so that should see quite a bit of footfall on that side. I am just glad to see growth to be honest - for a while there I thought I was losing my touch!

Don't be too heavy footed on it FC, it's not strong enough yet. It's certainly an improvement though! :dbgrtmb:
