    Hey everyone

This is the first time i have ever grown sweet peas and i just grew them from seeds i got free in a magazine. They are doing better than i ever thought. Im having trouble keeping up with the amount of flowers they are producing. I have three vases full of them in the kitchen and picked loads yesterday and already need to pick more today.

But my question is, is what do i do when they reach the height of the fence and grow taller than the supports I have for them?

if anyone could let me know what the best thing to do is that would be great. They are growing so quick the tallest two will be as tall as the fence in a couple of weeks

I personally would cut them back and then they should start growing side shoots.
Whenever I've grow them I've pinched them out at about 3 sets of leaves so you get bushier plants.

funnily enough @Anthony Rogers the two tallest are some of the ones that i pinched out lol the others i forgot about are the smallest.

i actually don't want them too busy because there are so many plants they are quite cramped already but i guess i will have to cut the tops off otherwise they will be trailing down the other side of the fence lol

hi what you are meant to do when you grow as a cordon (looks like you have pinched out the side shoots ) is to un tie them and lay them flat on the floor and they will re grow up , same method as growing tomatoes commercially

I def pinched out the tip not the side shoots when i did it and like a said only a few of the plants cause the others weren't big enough at that stage

I dont think i can lie them down as there are ever lasting sweet peas seedlings at the bottom so dont want them smothered and there is no room to lay them down at the bed in tiny and they would be over the patio in front of the back door

thank you for the suggestion but i dont think thats an option

just pinch out the top then , what you feeding them on as they should be more green in the leaf and stalks , also because you are tying them in cut off the tendril's so more energy will go into the flowers

I had the same question. Mine have climbed up the obelisks and are sprawling around the top. So far they're ok but might need to cut back too.

Are you supposed to deadhead when in flower or when they're starting just going over? I've been chopping at first sign of seed pods.

Well it would be a great pity to waste the flower and its gorgeous scent: pick the flower ;)
