My rose bush from Poundstretcher!

Hello everyone,

I bought a tiny little rose bush plant from Poundstretcher last summer for £1 of the realm. It has grown ridiculously fast and is now sporting 8 buds which have yet to flower, and one which did flower in early May.

My question is this: Does my plant look healthy and what do I need to do with it to keep it in tip top condition? I.e. pruning when and how much? Fertilise it? etc.

Complete rose novice, but it looks quite successful thus far!

Clear away the weeds from the base and give the top a good much with compost or even better horse muck which you can pick up easily from the DIY stores but give a good water 1st.

how deep is the soil , as if only shallow it will dry out quickly even in one day.

It is deep soil but it is in constant sun during the day, so I suppose I have answered my own question there. Poo is never a problem lol.

 

Hello everyone,

I've taken on board what has been said and I have given the rose a bit of a tidy up. It needed some pruning because of all the various diseased bits throughout - I have removed any trace of mildew or rust (there was quite a bit) . There are now no weeds at the bottom of the plant. Manure will be collected via bucket and dog walk tomorrow!

Would you suggest I prune the stem in the very middle right down - there seem to be no new shoots on it and the flower at the top has died back.

Also, is there a plant or plants I should consider planting to keep away the pesky aphids?

Just so you know @wiseowl, I went on the internet and found that the variety of rose I bought was the 'Kronenbourg'.

I wanted to get all of them on the day but the wife said nope!

when walking the dog with the bucket , you need manure that is well rotted not fresh as it will burn the roots.

 

They've got a pile as big as Everest at the stables, they can't get rid of the stuff at all. It has been there for bloody ages - would you suggest the bottom of the pile?

It sounds such a silly question, but I am being serious haha.
