I agree with both these comments.

Here I'm moving more towards exotic bulbous and tuberous species owing to space issues.

30yrs from seed, :), but held back by keeping in small pots.

I keep them bone dry in winter and only frost free, the caudex tends to shrink slightly, not sure on how they would fair in a tropical type, humid enviroment.

Hi @Harrison Deep, the two plants that I show tend to actually like different conditions, so unless you specialize in a certain species etc. we all have to make compromises.

Its quite amazing how adaptable plants are, in the main, to conditions that are not quite ideal.
Most just get on with it, but some knowledge of their origin is always helpful.

            Two Nicotiana glauca;
This one was grown from seed last year and overwintered in the greenhouse. It stands about a metre tall now.............

It is looking much better than my three year old 2.5 metres tall one that I planted out last year............

Having said that it does have some much fuller clusters of flowers forming and the newer foliage is looking a lot healthier as well.

Lovely LongK. I am sure, like me, you get the greatest pleasure from the ones you have grown from seed yourself.

But it can be a long job. I sowed some Hibiscus coccinea (swamp Hibiscus) about three years ago. All the information said that, although its a perennial, you can grow it as an annual and it will reach 6 feet and produce red flowers during the season. Its now 3 years later and my annual has never come anywhere near either 6 feet or flowering, inspite of the fact that I have been keeping it in the warmth of my conservatory all year round.

              - but this could be the year. :hapydancsmil:

Mine too. Actually aroids in general.
I lucked in a while back and bought two Sauromatum venosum tubers for a quid. Should flower next year.

Lucky you. I too love the more impressive of the aroids. My favourite being Arisaema tortuosum - mine is currently 6 feet high (including its pot) - though its in the process of going over now. I like your A. costatum LongK - but I wish someone would tell me the purpose of that long appendage. Googling doesn't help.

Lantana, from seed last year, has just started to flower.

                    2015_07020002.JPG
                    Plumbago auriculata also just started.

This is the second flush of my seed grown Brugmansia. A couple of evenings ago, some friends came round and sat in the conservatory. The first flower was opening and was a pale green colour, but I explained that it would turn apricot. Dawn said "no way" and was willing to put money on the fact that it wouldn't. We chatted for an hour, and when Dawn got up to leave she noticed that the flower had turned to apricot within the hour that we had been talking.

Acidanthera. This was from a cheap packet of bulbs that I bought about three years ago. It has only just flowered, and I have found that very cheap packets of bulbs can take 2 or 3 years to flower. But its pretty.

And this one I love. Justicia carnea - a member of the Acanthus family.

My A.tortuosum is just 1.2 metres in the ground. I love the way that it grows dead straight.

                      Boogered if I know!

Not sure on that id Peter - I reckon that a stray Gladdy corm has gotten in there. Here's Acidanthera (actually Gladiolus murielae)............

I really like them too. They have a few at OBG.
