    Hi Apple Blossom,
    No I ain't Lol.
The history stuff was taught us in schools and we used to be taken on trips to all the historic places / houses around here.

The more recent stuff you just grow up with it happening, local news etc.

        I kmm
I know you were you daft thing :)

You mean someone has actually been here Lol

Unfortunately though i don't think the schools nowadays tend to bother with local history/studies. It's a shame really because I think it helps children/people to respect where they're from and their backgrounds.

          Hi Sheal,

Unfortunately it's one of those towns that went through a horrific change during the 70's/80's.
We moved here in the mid 70's when it was a medium sized market town, full of old buildings etc and reliant on the carpet trade ( we were famous all over the world for that).
Since then, the various councils have decided to virtually demolish/ replace what was here ( we now have only 1 street left from the old town and the castle was demolished except for 1 tower to build the fire station ! ).
We are now basically a dormitory town to Birmingham and the Black Country, around 20 miles away. Consequently we have been stripped of our town/ borough status and are now one of those new areas ( Wyre Forest ), and the population has grown from around 40,000 to around 100,000.

What we are lucky with around here is some beautiful countryside and the stunning river Severn and it's valley. We do have the Severn Valley Steam Railway and the West Midlands Safari Park both in the town.

Oh, and I forgot to say.... the town center is currently being dug up again, but this time planning has been refused to demolish half of Church st, the last reminder if the old town.

However, they are going to install blue plaques and a walk of fame.

Yes ME....Many times and I love it, would have probably moved there but a bit to far to travel work wise.....I totally agree with you, we went everywhere on trips in school to learn about the area, don't think they do it now which is a shame. Geography was my favourite...lots of trips out :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

It's a shame that most of the original buildings have been destroyed, even part of the castle! How on earth did they get away with that!

I didn't realise the population was that big, 20,000 more than the island here. I googled images to have a look around but unfortunately many of them are similar. It's good to have the countryside and River Severn valley on your doorstep. :)

The next time I'm in town ( probably Monday), I'll take some photos and put them on a non-gardening thread. ( I've got the feeling I'm gonna be told off for rambling on ( as I do) here).

We have a 'Members Gallery' forum that's ideal for your thread Anthony but I don't suppose you'll get told off here as it's "M"'s thread. :)

                    Mind you, having said that.......:heehee:
