I also remember a photo being removed because the camera's time/date were at the factory default (1980 or something) although the photo obviously had been taken recently, it caused a fair bit of bad feeling and I think that member no longer takes part.

If someone wants to cheat it's very simple to fiddle with the EXIF and manipulate the date - or just to blank out the data. So I think it comes down to honesty.

 

Exif is the data embedded in a digital photo, hidden away it contains things like the date/time, location. You can view it with a simple extension to your browser, so hovering the mouse over a photo pops up the hidden data. I use it mainly to see what camera settings folk use, such as ISO, shutter speed, f stop etc:

It produces a little banner at the top of the photo as below:

 

I can get that from the programme I save my photos in. I just click on 'properties' so when I want to compare how plants have done at the same day each year, I can.

I don't remember setting anything when I got the camera - but I can't remember what I had for breakfast
