What jobs are we doing in the Garden today 2015

That's a lovely colour Sheal I will have to read up on it more..... now that Mr AB has flattened an area of the garden.... which I was going to sort out later in the year I need to look at what shrubs I can put into it. Its so difficult when you know absolutely nothing about shrubs. I think I will have a look through my books and try and find things that will give colour all through the year. The reason I am so particular with this area is that this is what you see looking out of the kitchen window

 

Well, we got the hydrangeas planted up, the fig tree in its next pot, and the first of the trellis up. Unfortunately hubby fell off the ladder when putting up the trellis -missed the last two steps, and tumbled backwards onto the drive. He missed the dogs, and one of my planters broke his fall, so instead of a broken back, or arm, he has escaped with a sprained right wrist.

Feeling so blessed right now, it could have been so much worse. He has talked me through how to cook his secret trademark steak, and is now feeling quite nervous, as he feels all his secrets are given up. Poor lad, feeling silly, and shaken, but I am so grateful! It could have been so much worse...

 

Poor Mr Sian in Belgium Really sorry to hear that, but I agree it could have been a lot worse - thank goodness for your planter! Hope his wrist heals up quickly. Now the question is, how quickly can he put the rest of the trellis up for you with his left hand? Wouldn't do to leave the job half done

 

I ended up doing most of the drilling at the top of the ladder to get the first trellis up, but it does look good, and the Passion flower is already investigating the new territory!

After much searching on my part, and much resistance on his, I managed to persuade hubby to wear a support tube on his arm (don't know what they are called, but you know, those elasticated tube you wear double thickness? - brain not quite woken up yet!). The wrist feels better today, but I will try to get him to wear it at work today as well....

 

Today's jobs, fit led light to bird table, paint fence, fill planter with topsoil and build second planter

 

We're having building work done at the mo. The builders have been amazing, not one plant damaged. But there has to be stuff out in the patio, so I've been traversing a watering assault course. Not going to lie, it's very difficult out there right now and a bit depressing after all the effort to this point but I'm persevering! So lots of watering, deadheading and general pruning and tidying up.

My Canna had some rust on the small leaves. I removed them but a big leaf has a few spots now, so I'm wondering if I should remove the whole leaf.

Otherwise, thoughts are starting to turn to tulip bulb ordering and other autumn planting :D

Does anyone know how likely it is that my sweet peas will keep flowering through to September if I deadhead and feed, or is that too optimistic?

Be carefull out there and persevere, hopefully it will all be worth it in the end

As for the Canna I personally would remove the leaf, as if you can see some spores on it there could be others.

Oh ,bulbs, don't, not yet..... I'm still up to me neck in seedlings to be pricked out and planted out...

If you google" when do sweet peas flower", there is an excellent piece from the Daily Telegraph dated 5th April 2012, it really is interesting and puts a lot of the old myths to bed. Basically with careful watering/feeding/deadheading there's no reason why they shouldn't go on until the frosts have them.

Thanks Anthony I just read that article and it makes sense - I'll keep dead heading and looking after them in the heat and report back it if works. So far, ours have been going for 4 - 6 weeks and are still flowering beautifully. Just hope I can keep them going for a bit of crossover with the Dahlias. I'll probably sow in spring next year for a later show, unless these autumn sown ones do keep going.

Thanks for the advice on the Canna - I was reticent because it's the biggest and best leaf, but you're right, I should prevent it spreading further.

 

The first trellis up (Passion flower trellis extension). It still needs a couple of fixing screws at the bottom, but we ran out of large washers.) It's basically green plastic covered fencing, attached to the wall....

What we like about it is that it is so discrete. More than a few feet away, and you barely notice it. But there are loads of points to attach plants to, and self-climbers need no supervision at all!

 

I had to look a few times before I actually saw it,great idea
