My Yucca

This is a picture of the yucca we inherited with the house, I have only noticed this plant previously because of its annoying sharp hard leaves, however this year it is flowering and around 9-10 feet high. I didnt know yuccas were able to produce these flowers.
After reading up a bit I was very surprised to discover the yucca is actually a member of the lilly family! And it comes with its own moth?

I did look up the taxonomy of Yucca - but there are so many different systems now all with different names that I get really confused.

 

Garden yuccas flower more often than is often supposed.
Every year for some once established.

Mostly when they dont its down to poor growing conditions.

We dont have the right moth in the UK.

 

I kind of put Yuccas in the agave family, but I know that was once considered in the lilly family.

I dont put much score in what the botanists say, as mostly they cant make their minds up about anything, but I suppose it does keep them in a job.

 

I agree Pete - if they can't get the names right - why should anything else be right.

 

I did try to see which specimen we have but there are so many to trawl through I gave up.
Anyhow my better half has now cut the flowering part right off as they had died, just hoping she has done the right thing . Time will tell!
