Hi, pretty new to gardening. I'm in the process of clearing an overgrown communal garden.

The first thing i want to try are fruit bushes, Blueberry, Blackberry Raspberry, that sort of thing.

i'm looking for ideas for thornless bushes.

There is a gooseberry called Pax that is virtually spine free. LY654 is a thornless loganberry. Red, black and white currants are thorn free. Among blackberries there is Black Satin, Merton Thornless and Loch Ness.

Hi John, first of all, sorry for the long post but I hope it helps.

I'm new to gardening too which is why my husband bought me this great book called the fruit expert.

So I'm sure there must be more varieties than this but these are the thornless ones mentioned in the book. It only mentions Highbush and lowbush blueberries. The former only good in soil with a pH of 5.5 or less and the latter needs a boggy environment. But there are some others.
Raspberries, red white black and pink currants. These now are all hybrids, dewberries, kings acre, loganberry l654 agm, silvanberry, tayberry Buckingham agm, tummelberry, veitchberry and thornless youngberry from what I can see don't have any thorns.

BlackBerry: black satin, loch maree, loch Ness agm, Merton thornless and Oregon thornless (which I have)

Thats all I can see from this book at the moment. As for me I just got a BlackBerry, whitecurrant and raspberry at the weekend. I'm looking to get a pink currant as well, they are supposed to be nice nd sweet. Got one more spot after that so I might try one of the hybrids I mentioned. Next year is going to be so yummy!

Thanks. I've not long bought 'Growing Fruit & Veg In Scotland' and that's been fine so far for reference.

Working offshore i'm only getting small bites at clearing an overgrown communal garden, this should be cleared in time for planting before the end off the season.

At the moment i've decided on one of these Blueberry mix's http://www.scotplantsdirect.co.uk/fruits-to-grow/soft-fruits/blueberries
They're 2 year old bushes grown not far from me so i know they take to growing in Scotland.

Blackberries, i'm looking at Loch Tay & Loch Ness.

I also believe i need more that one bush for cross pollination. Do these have to be the same type of bush or can it be a mix of bushes like I've posted above.

They can be a mix:blue thumb:...I only have one Blueberry bush and it's fruited reasonably well on it's own but I will be getting another when I get around to it:dbgrtmb:...

I got a large order of Buxus hedging from Scots plants and was very pleased with the service:dbgrtmb:
