This area was so overgrown when we moved in that we decided to cut it all down to give it all a chance to have regrowth this year, it was quite brutal, but all the plants were strangling each other

This photo was taken earlier this year and you can see that the summer house was cleared and everything was tied in and tidied up and a good fertilizer was added and dug in

    IMG_0767.JPG

Now that it is all growing back I'm not sure what this is, does it flower, or is it just a creeper. The honeysuckle along side it is growing really well and looks extremely healthy.

Among the above I think this is a rambling rose but I just don't know what this is all over it, at the beginning of the spring it was looking really healthy and growing really well.
    P1020349.JPG

Should I just remove it completely so that it doesn't affect all the other plants?

    Thank you for any help

I think you might have a variegated honeysuckle and a rose covered in mildew.

Thanks Pete I've just had a quick scout around the Internet and it looks very much like Japanese honeysuckle Lonicera or it could be Lonicera Japanese mint crisp.

I'm just having a read up on Rose mildew so thank you for that too :dbgrtmb:

Thanks Anthony, I've just been looking at them and the leaves definitely look like the two I've named above.

Just really worried now about the mildew.... I have a lot of new roses and I don't want it to spread :yikes:

        :yikes: microscopic, air-borne spores!!
Having had a read up I'm worried now that if I disturb the effected areas will the air-borne spores be released and then possibly effect my other roses. I wonder @wiseowl if you could give me some advice on what would be best :)

Good morning @Apple Blossom my friend this is only woos personal view and IMHO, just carry on regardless you cannot protect your Roses 100% just has we cannot protect our children 100%;) my what a subject for 4 am in the morning:heehee:

To be honest although most of these diseases Powdery Mildew etc look unpleasant and can weaken the Rose but I personally have never seen a Roses die from any of these if treated and given some TLC,so put your mind at rest your Roses are much stronger than you think and if you get any problems in the future we will deal with them between us;) just enjoy your Roses:smile:

Powdery mildew fungi seem to be everywhere. They overwinter in plant debris begin producing spores in the spring. These spores are carried to your plants by wind, insects and splashing water. remove and destroy all infected plant parts

Interestingly enough, the most effective measure in preventing and treating powdery mildew is to spray the foliage of your plants daily with plain water from the hose. Powdery mildew hates water! The only caveat with this method is to be sure you do it early in the day so that the foliage completely dries before cooler evening temperatures arrive, otherwise you may invite other fungal diseases, such as black spot, into your garden.

This link is just meant to give you more information and not to cause you more concern;)

Good Evening @wiseowl, I do apologies for acknowledging your post so late in the evening, I was in work at 2am this morning and only got home after 2pm this afternoon so it was a rather long day. When I got home the Garden was graving a good watering and then I got caught up in all the de-heading, talking to my roses, getting tea out of the veggie patch and only just now had time to sit down for a moment :phew:

Firstly thank you for putting my mind at rest, I've just had a quick peek at the link and will have a good read up tomorrow evening as I am on a course all day:gaah: then days off Thursday and Friday :hapydancsmil:so will be able to deal with the problem then and give it 100%

Quite strange as when I was watering my annual plants I noticed that two of them have the same symptoms. I will assess the areas tomorrow depending if I get home early or on Thursday and let you know the outcome.

Once again thank you for your help :spinning:

Hi Lorea, that has just convinced me.... that is exactly what I have, thank you for sharing your photo with me. I don't think mine will flower this year due to the amount it was cut back in the spring, but we can but wait and hope. I notice yours has a flower peeking out there.... would love to see a photo when it is in full flower :)

You're quite welcome! The one in the photo is a cutting I took just last year from a bigger plant, so you can see how quickly it's flowered. I'm a bit of a disaster on the cuttings front, so that should give you some idea as to how easy they are to propagate - I have three more all from cuttings. The parent had been flowering its socks off since about April, but had become a bit top heavy and was looking a bit worse for wear so I cut it back last week. The flowers smell divine and have a powerful scent despite being so small.

Good Afternoon @wiseowl, I've been extremely busy over the last few days due to a charity event that will be starting next week so I have only just had chance to sit down and read the information you sent me, there's a lot of information in the link, thank you so much for sending me the details :)

Having read the contents I actually think that the problem is probably overcrowding and to be honest it is on the south side of the summer hut so it does not get a lot of sun or the circulation it needs, I'm surprised that once upon a time it was so overgrown and surviving so well.

Its been pouring down today so hopefully after work tomorrow I will be able to tackle the problem and cut out the bad areas as described.

Thank you again Woo for your support I shall keep you posted on progress :dbgrtmb:
