FUCHSIA'S - 2015

I think we're sorted now

 

I had just started typing again, I'm glad I hadn't got as far as the post button.

Right, yes the plant is Microphylla and I bought it for my mum back in the 80's I think it was, certainly many moons ago anyway! Possibly ten years ago I took cuttings from it and lost them at an early stage. My brother took cuttings a few years ago for me, which is what you can see above but as I said I lost both plants last winter. The winters are mild here and rarely see frost so they were fine, it's the wind that does the damage.

You're on the list for future cuttings should I get plants going again. A word in my brother's shell like ear I think. My family live in Essex, so I have to rely on my brother to swipe the cuttings but my mum doesn't mind, she's no longer well enough to look after her garden.

If I remember right, I believe @longk has Microphylla too.

 

I had two. The one in the ground died over the winter but the one in a pot survived as it was much closer to the house.

The more simple the Fuchsia the better IMO.

 

How! It is fully hardy here and we are much colder.
I'm sure that it's not you but something about your conditions.

 

I wonder if you're planting them deep enough Wiseowl ? Around 3 to 5" is best.
Hawkshead is hardy to -10, I'd have thought you wouldn't have got much lower than that

A good book, if you want to have a look at it ( WH Smiths sell it ) is " The Gardeners Guide To Growing Fuchsias ". It's by John Nicholass ( he is the God of Fuchsia growing ), 2011.

 

Woo, you are a star. I lost my Hawkshead last Winter too. I was just too dank, dull, well and miserable for many things.

Anthony, I'll do the mini bag cloche method then - in September. This morning, I potted on 2 Annabelle cuttings ( a branch got snapped and gifted me with 2 new opportunities) and they are looking robust and keen to get on. So is their Mum whose on the point of flower burst and looking full of promise. Is Annabelle Winter hardy please? I will take a piccie of Mum when she's in bloom,

Microphylla, rings a loud bell, cannot recall any of the other names you mentioned @Anthony Rogers, bought it off ebay last year, I overwintered in unheated greenhouse.

Hi Jenny,

Annabel is lusted as hardy to - 10 by most catalogues, however the testing was done in the Netherlands not the UK.
Saying that, I notice that you're in Battle so you're quite a bit further south than the Netherlands.
It may be worth trying one of yours outside ( but it is getting a bit late for permanent planting now as you have to make sure they are well rooted before the first frosts), but, I'd keep at least one as insurance.
