It would be great to see a subforum dedicated to weeds

There is an identification section but it would be great to have a sub forum dedicated to weeds only, maybe in the Gardening Discussion section.

Every gardener has to face these enemies and more info on how to best deal with them would be great!

 

Well, whilst I welcome a section on weeds, I have to disagree that every weed is an enemy! It would be nice to see an appreciation of some delicate, attractive weeds (that are easily uprooted if need be).

The definition of a weed is a plant in the wrong place!....SO - could be anything!

Not all weeds are pervasive and some are even pretty, e.g. rosebay willowherb (check out my profile photo).

My personal thoughts are, if its a weed for you, kill it.
If you like it, let it live.

I've never found the need to ID a weed before killing it.

 

I'm sorry Mowerman but I agree with everyone else.

There is no such thing as a weed, just a plant in the wrong place.

Remember that every single thing we grow was originally a wild species i.e. in your description .... a weed.

It would be interesting to know how many GC members have set aside a portion of their garden for growing dandelions?

 

The dandelions in my garden have set aside their own portion of garden @Freddy and I've been battling them for years!

I think Zigs is the only one that grows dandelions with a purpose.

 

I've got a wild verbascum thapsus growing in the front garden. It just showed up so I left it and let it grow. It's huge and the bees love it.

Sure, a weed is any plant that isn't wanted by the garden owner but I'm talking about a section on real weeds. The things that can take over any garden and cause lots of work like: dandelions, horse tails, bind weed, Japanese knowtweed, creeping buttercup, lesser celedine, burdock, dog violets, bracken etc, etc.

Does anybody want a garden full of these?

If you want to start a thread on weeds in the wildflower forum, i'll sticky it, rather than creating a new subforum. Last time we did that we wiped the entire board

 

So do I .....and nettles. Lots of butterfly larvae can be found on them. I also like celandine

 

Peacock caterpillars on one of my Nettle patches, just avoid placing anything next to them as their seeds will rain down on them.

 

My lawns, front and back, are full of dandelions, plantains, lesser celandine, daisies, clover, primroses and creeping buttercups. Makes them far more interesting. Also requires less cutting.
Also have a strip of nettles down one side, not as many caterpillars as some lucky people but lots of ladybirds and hoverflies etc.
