I never got past using Basic! :heehee: It was good in its day and was sufficient for the machines that I had. :)

              I think I'll stick to W7.

I suppose it also depends on what you use your computer for. I use it for GC (of course :heehee:), some websites for some organisations I run, a bit of research and emails (lots of them as we get between 100-150 per day). Apart from that it's mainly storing photos.

So it's just a mixture of a modern version of a telephone and a filing system. :snork:

I might change to W10 if it helps with doing the gardening as well but I suspect it won't do anything more than look out the Window. :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

I can't see the point of delaying the inevitable. The thought of changing from Windows 7 to 10 puts fear into me as I will be blindly leading myself through it, but let's face it, it's got to happen and may as well be sooner rather than later. I'm also on the brink of needing a new computer and I don't want to be setting that up and at the same time coping with Windows 10. I'll be moving to 10 sometime in September. :)

For those of you delaying, remember that in five years Microsoft will be removing Windows 7 and possibly 8.1, also the other older systems you've been using until now and updates on those are already being stopped.

Jack - I am using Live Mail on my W10 machine.

I think you are probably right Sheal. I believe there are two problem areas with a new operating system.

                          A) The initial setting up of the computer to the way that you like it

For me the problem with W8 and W10 has been the initial setting up. Everything has been moved, and you can't find where the settings are, plus all the crapware that you have to remove in a new computer. I have mostly done that now.

I was probably most disappointed by the fact that W10 is so similar to W8 - it just has a few extra bits added. Given the bad publicity of W8, I had hoped, naively, that they might move back towards XP. But as Shiney said - its progress. And you have to pay a price for progress.

I was pleased that I have two browsers - the new Edge and Chrome. In W8 U-tube wouldn't run in Internet Explorer, but would run in Chrome. And in W10 I have financial charts that won't run in Edge, but do run in Chrome. Also some PDF files will open in Edge but not in Chrome.

I have found the solution to my PDF problem. I needed to disable Chrome's internal PDF reader. To do this you have to type "about:plugins" in the top box in Chrome, which shows you the plugins settings page. Chrome then opens the PDF file in Acrobat. All in all I don't find that very user friendly - its not intuitive, which is my major complaint with W8 and W10.

                          B) The ongoing daily use

Once you have got over the setting up, and are just using the machine to do routine jobs, life is much easier. And I can understand how Shiney is pleased, having reached that stage.

Routine jobs are now no more difficult than in any other Windows version. However I do have an ongoing complaint about the browsers and modern software, where the menus structure has been removed and replaced by a few hieroglyphs. For instance the old IE options box has been removed and now you don't know what you can change or how to do it.

Also by this time you should also have learnt to avoid using the programs that still exist in W10 that ask you to tap screens, or leave you with an almost blank screen and no way of getting out.

I am sure W8 and W10 have been dumbed down for the sake of kids who can't read. After all they are the ones that will make money for microsoft, by running up bills of £5,000 in a month buying new levels in the games. An old fart like me isn't going to match that. I am not going to get a newer version of Excel or Word in case they have done away with all the menus in them as well.

I probably would have been a Luddite if I'd been born just a few years earlier :heehee:

Whilst my machine is doing what I want it to do I don't see any reason for changing to W10. It's the same one that I've had for about 15 years (just like my garden fork where I've only had to change the handle and tines a few times over the last 50 years :snork:).

They stop supporting W7 in five year's time but that doesn't mean it won't still continue running for a while. By that time I think the kinks in W10 may have been sorted out.

By then I may even have got an iPad, tablet, kindle or smart phone - but I don't think so. Like PeterS I shan't be getting a more up to date version of Word or Excel either. They do what I want and how I want and I don't need many of the features that they already have.

It's like my mobile phone, all it's capable of is making phone calls and I rarely turn that on! Whilst we were on holiday the other week all the other people around us seemed to be on their smart phones all the time. What's that all about . We're on holiday to get away from everyone!! :loll:
