I love what you've done, especially the layout of the beds and the path

It looks so different to the usual square/ rectangle with a border up each side.

They were good except you laminated an A4 sheet THEN cut it up. When you did that, you unlaminated the edges of each one. They went very soggy rather quickly It's a shame because your handwriting was exquisite

Thank you! If everything was around the edges with a lawn in the middle then you would spend your time in on the lawn just turning around and looking at everything from one spot. The layout forces you to walk around to view things from different angles.

Don't be fooled! Mowing that lawn in stripes is nearly impossible! It's not without it's challenges

Is that a GC tradition? Renovate a garden and all GC members flock for a garden party?

Are those your potatos on the lawn and why have you got a coffin in front of them ?

 

The potatoes and "coffin" are not actually on the lawn There's a square of bare earth there with the lawn going around it. The potatoes are doing well (they're making me smile whenever I see them). They are sat behind the coldframe. 6ft long and I can fit about 8 seedling trays in there I think. Maybe 9.

In November/December, when my trees come, they will be sat exactly where the potato bags are now. I think I'm going to keep them in for now. My uncle has a plum tree that's been in a pot for 10 years and it has tonnes of fruit. I don't think it will do the trees any harm

That sounds good with the trees, it will add another dimension as they won't be tucked away in the corner.
I'm not sure about having a cold frame in full sun, how much ( in hours ) full sun does it get there ?

 

ANTHONY!! The entire lawn was designed around that coldframe being there!! Don't tell me it's a bad idea!!

It gets full sun in the morning right through until about 1/2pm. Then the sun hits the back of it instead of going through the panels at the top. It gets propped open in full sun and remains comfortably warm throughout the day.

As for the trees, I'm glad we're thinking along the same lines

It would be interesting to see what Armandii or someone else says, but, I think if it was me I would get some green shafe netting ( or even some net curtain ) to put over it as you've got the sun straight over it between 12/2.

You have to think for the future in this game and what sort of plants/seedlings you'll be growing in there. Have you got a thermomometer ? It would be good to know what temperature it gets to, bearing in mind most seedlings would be happiest around 15 deg or so.

I don't think you'll need to move it , you just need to take some precautionary measures.

The good thing is that the frames on the top are hinged so that I can prop them open and the plastic sheets slide out, so I can swap them for something else if need be.

Another option is to push it back a bit (towards the potatoes) and have a couple of plants growing in front of it to give it some shade. Like clematis up bamboo canes?

I'm currently growing sage, spring onions, parsley, chives, oregano, leeks, fennel, honesty (not a crop but wanted to get them growing). They're germinating now. In seed trays ready to go in the top bed when Ants plants move into their spots. I've also got some leeks in there which are small plants ready to plant in the raised bed.

T'was an impulse purchase which didn't get much planning but when my Mrs shows an interest, I take the opportunity to get her involved
