2015 Tomato Growing

I have been following this discussion for a while now, so I thought that I would add my findings this year. I have changed my regime this year, partially using some advice in "Practical Gardener". I have discarded pots and gone back to Levington growbags and two old favourites, Shirley and Gardeners Delight. I put two plants to a bag and water only once a week with a small feed three days later after the first truss set instead of watering my usual minimum of two or three times a week. The foliage is suffering badly (stress) but the plants seem to be putting all of their energy into producing fruit, I have been picking large ripe fruit for several weeks now.
Just my findings, hope that this helps.

 

Yep, that would be great thanks. I've used Delia's recipes before for various things so it would be worth trying a chutney recipe of hers.

'Sungold' is cropping and ripening well, all my other tomatoes have fruit but are still thinking about ripening. Don't give up hope everyone, these stalled three times!

 

I think I`ll have to bring a few of my outdoor one s back into the conservatory as the flower/fruit count is about 10% of last year. Can only get better right?

 

Your conservatory will probably be ideal WeeTam, go for it!

 

Finally, my tomatoes seem to be up for a great job this season. Normally, they are grown in open fields in Bulgaria and begin to ripen way earlier than here. However, it's cooler at my place, as we live near the mountain.
I haven't treated them with anything. I just added cow manure to the soil at the time of planting. The varieties are produced by local growers, but most of them are new to me. The larger ones taste awesome.

I have been growing tomatoes for years but for whatever reason this years crop has been a total disaster, 8 plants all with the same problem.
Ive no idea what I've done that's different this season to create these mutant tomatoes and would appreciate any thoughts from the panel.

It's such a shame when a crop is pretty much destroyed by pests or diseases. I've been looking around on Google Wyn and it would seem that the toms with holes in could be caterpillar damage. The misshapen toms could be down to low temperatures when the flowers set but apparently doesn't affect their edibility, when they are ripe of course!

Many thanks for this and I think you might be right about the low temperatures after all it's been a pretty poor summer in North Wales .
I will give them a chance to ripen and see what they taste like .
