          @Wp1234 They look like fused fruit caused by fused flowers ('megablooms'), which often occurs at low temperatures. The brown bits look like 'catfacing', which is caused by incomplete pollination, common in greenhouses and in megablooms.

                My polytunnel toms have been holding hands up at the apex for a while now, but have almost stopped growing. Everything, both outdoors and under cover, is now ripening apart from outdoor Ferlines (incredibly slow this year) and most of my beefsteaks. Think I'll grow a whole polytunnel bed of early ripening Red Alert bush toms next year and replace them in August with some other crops. (bit dark in there early morning before the sun gets up)

                  I've had this problem this year, can't recall ever having seen it before. At first I thought it was mice but then found the culprits under the leaves.

                    How can you tell when they are ready to pick. All my gardeners delight are green as Kermit the Frog, but I bought a Heartbreaker seedling from Wyevale and they are turning red. They feel firm. But how do I know they are ripe enough?

                    They are ripe when you can gently snap the fruit off, grasp them and gently push upwards against the joint on the truss. If they don't snap off they aren't ready. Beefsteak types take a bit more effort to snap, they are ready when the fruit are all completely red (assuming they are a red variety) - if in doubt try one.
